19.08.2007 13:00 to 18:00
*The times shown may change, depending on DST settings
City/Town: Zurich (airport)
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Large carpark near charter jet terminal

NOTE: Due to lack of anyone confirming for this event it has been cancelled. It may be attempted again at a future date, if any interest is shown.

Hi everyone - the weather for Sunday is supposed to be great, so why not get in some rollerblading? Who knows, it might be the best weather for the rest of the year!

Who: Anyone with rollerblades, any ability level (don't be shy, we'll split the groups if there is a problem)
When: 13:30. If you'd like to get in some practice you can come earlier and skate around the car park. I'll be there from 12:30 to give any pointers (disclaimer: I'm not a rollerblading teacher, nor am I an expert!)
Where: Between the passenger terminal and the executive jet terminal there is a huge car park. See attached pictures for details.

Note: this is a weather-dependant event. Please check into this thread on Sunday morning for any status updates!

The proposed route is flat, wide and quite scenic. The goal to to skate to some Roman ruins in Bülach, and back again. See attached pictures for the proposed route.

How to get there (car) - If driving northbound, skip the exit you'd normally take for the airport, and go one futher. You'll loop under the freeway and pretty soon you'll see some buildings and a massive car park. See attachment for a diagram of what I'm talking about
How to get there (public transport) - Well I'm not an expert on this one, but I would guess take a train to the airport, go outside and start heading north (turn left if the terminal is behind you as you walk out, or right if it is in front of you). Follow the road in basically a straight line and you should see a big operations center building on your left. Keep going and you'll soon find yourself in a massive car park. At the far end of this car park is the meeting point.

How will you find me? Big tall bloke wearing and orange cap and blue sunglasses.

I'd like to turn this into a regular event, and preferably have someone else run the organising. We could go to different places and encourage skaters of all levels of ability to come along.

So please show your support, use the RSVP function if you are coming and even if you have some skill teaching skating why not come a little early to give tips to those that are practising before the start time.

Please see the attached files in the next message for all the details...
RSVP'd Maybe: 1 (1 members and No guests)
  • Jazz - Sounds perfect. Trying to learn at the moment, so I'll be ideal for the beginners group.
RSVP'd No: 2
  • litespeed - Working 0600 - 1800 :-(((
  • thoean - Wave up to the iron-birds... flying out of Kloten this Sunday morning! Otherwise I wouldn't miss that event.
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

I've removed the pictures which used to be here. If you'd like to see the route / location, check this post instead.

Re: Rollerblading

Just an update on this - it's almost 24 hours to go before the event and there are no definite signups.

Unless I get at least four definite "yes" RSVPs by 8pm tonight, I'm going to cancel the event.

So if you've been sitting on the sidelines and later decide you'd like to come, it may backfire on you .

Nevermind, it was worth a try. Weather is looking good for tomorrow still though, so think I will go and use a local industrial estate instead.

Thanks anyway.

Mark, don't be disappointed, better luck next time. Experienced forum posters will already know the advice given in the social events sticky:
"Post your event ahead of time - don't be disappointed if you advertise something last minute and nobody comes."

Hi Diem, don't worry, I'm not disappointed - I had already been rollerblading 2 days before that, and only started this as an attempt to try and set an example to other people to maybe include others next time they plan something.

But it was hardly last minute - I posted it a full four days in advance. I would have posted it earlier if I had known I was going to do it.

I was a little surprised, but disappointed? No.

However it won't stop me posting the event in future. Even though organising events is a thankless job, I know that there are people that appreciate them. Hopefully more people will consider organising events in the Zurich area (where most of us seem to come from) in the future.
