City/Town: Sihlwald, ZH
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Sihlwald train station

A digital photography photowalk is a chance for people to get together and practice their photography. It's a chance to share knowledge and learn from others.

We discussed starting this event on this thread - please read it for the thoughts and discussions behind this event.

To get to Sihlwald take the S4 from the Zurich main station (platform 1). The train leaves at 10:18 and arrives 10:43 (return trains leave back to Zurich at 45 past the hour every hour). You can find more information (in German) about the location here.

Driving is also possible, but last time I did it the return journey was "interesting". I sat in almost stand-still traffic along the Sihl due to roadworks which will last until November, and when I got though that I had to queue forever at the end of the autobahn as it terminates in Zurich. Next time I'll give up and just take the train, or drive over the back down to Horgen and take the ferry!

Pre-requisites for this event:
  • Willing to share knowledge if you have it, and willing to listen and experiment if you don't.
  • Any type of camera is welcome (even film) - compact cameras or DSLRs are welcome.
  • You are not expected to know what terms like apeture, ISO mean, but you should at least be able to figure out how to change these settings in your camera if you want to (in other words, if you are completely ignorant as to how to operate your camera, read some of the basic instructions before you go). Please don't expect others to figure out how to operate your camera if you haven't bothered to learn for yourself!
  • A willingness to also have some fun and learn at the same time.
Focus for this event will be a nature / water theme. We'll try and photograph some water, and if we can't find much water we'll try and get some nice nature / forest type shots.

There are times in a forest when light is low, so if you have a small tripod, you'd be well advised to bring it with you.

Since we will be wandering around in a forest you are also advised to bring a packed lunch with you.

It is hoped to turn this into a regular event visiting different places - so if you like the idea please show your support.

NOTE: This event is weather dependant - if it looks like bad weather we will move the event to an alternate location (close to Zurich no doubt). Please check this thread the evening before, or on the morning of the event to make sure that there have been no last minute changes!

Sounds good, although being in Basel - do u know how long it would take to get to the location from Basel?

My DSLR is itching for an outing in Switzerland - so sounds promising!

Re: Digital Photography: Photowalk

I did the reverse trip from Thalwil - Basel and it took just over the hour and I'm just down the road from the meeting point so if you come by train 90 mins should just about do it (check sbb)

Re: Digital Photography: Photowalk

Hi,
I would like to join you if you don't mind. I have driven past Sihlwald on a few occasions and thought what a great place.
I use digital and film and have some knowledge of landscape photography, if I can help anyone else out it would be my pleasure, equally if anyone has any advice to offer it would be appreciated.

My name is Jo McKenzie and I have recently moved to Switzerland. I was studying for my city and guilds in photography in Reading in England. It would be great to meet other photographers, as I miss having other people to share ideas with.

Look forward to meeting you
Jo

Re: Digital Photography: Photowalk

Ok, this event is tomorrow, and the weather forecast is excellent. Who knows this might be last good weather we get for the year!

So please come along and show your support if you are able.

For those coming by car - be aware that the centre of Zurich is closed for the day - the so called "Multimobil" event (except that multi doesn't include cars). I've checked the map, and it looks like the main routes around the city are still open, but may be chaotic (especially since the weather will be good, and many people might be out in the cars enjoying it).

In any case I'll re-iterate my warning about driving. Roadworks on the Sihltal will significantly delay your return journey, and the usual Sunday afternoon tailback at the end of the freeway as you come into Zurich won't help either. Last time I added a full hour to my return trip. I'm coming with 3 people, and since the combined train tickets will add up to just under 60 francs, I'm still brining the car. I'm going to take the Meilen / Horgen ferry instead (at least for the return trip). If you are coming by car you might also want to consider this.

I'll also bring along a couple of tripods for those who don't have one. But if you have one - please bring it along, you might find it useful.

My mobile number is 079 334 5358 just in case anyone has an issue getting there. Otherwise - see you all tomorrow.

Re: Digital Photography: Photowalk

The walk was certainly fun, and even inspired me to finally make myself an account... even before I discovered that I had accidentally carried off a compact tripod. I hope the owner is reading this, and can tell me the best way to return it.

Re: Digital Photography: Photowalk

Thanks for organising a cool event, and perfect weather Mark. Had some good chats about photography and got to see another little corner of this beautiful country.

Now I've just gotta get off my slack arse and kick my housemate off my computer for long enough to see if I actually took some halfway decent shots on the day.
