City/Town: Zürich
Event Type: Dinner
Meeting Point: Badenerstrasse 457, 8003 Zürich

IMPORTANT PRICE AND MENU UPDATES IN THE THREAD BELOW: PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Dear all, as anticipated by Basher here, in January we have K.

K??? Kurious?

I will give you a hint.

No, we are not going to be fighting...Another hint:

Yes, we are going to KOREA!

I made a reservation at the Korea Pavillion, Badenerstrasse 457, 8003 Zürich (tram #2, stop: Letzigrund) for 8pm.

I visited the restaurant, tried the food, and spoke with the manager yesterday. He is a very nice person, and he told me there is no problem in accommodating us all (max 24 people), but on January 15 I will close the RSVP and confirm to him final numbers. Please see below for the chef's proposed menu and price.

Looking forward to seeing many of you!

RSVP'd Yes: 20 (15 members and 5 guests) RSVP'd No: 6
  • basher - :-(
  • Celtictwist
  • jako - Cant make this one
  • argus - Did not particularly like the food, but perhaps I didn't order their best. I usually love Korean cuisine.
  • JLF - Something has come up... Enjoy it! :-)
  • Cris1973 - Unfortunanely looks like I won't be in Zurich on this weekend, I am very sorry! Have fun!
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Re: The A-Z of Dining in Zürich

Hi all! I was gone for a while and unable to check emails and internet, so sorry for late replies. When I am back in Zurich next week, I will check with the restaurant regarding menus, etc. and will post here.

Regarding final numbers, I will check that also and confirm to the restaurant (and post here).

See you all soon!

Re: The A-Z of Dining in Zürich

Dear all, I am back in action, and with some updates - thanks for being patient!

First, the restaurant has no problem accommodating a big group, but due to kitchen limitations (e.g. 20 people simultaneously ordering completely different dishes), the owner offers us the following menu suggestion, for CHF 50 per person (drinks excluded). Please note that each person will get all of the items below (i.e. you don't have to choose one appetizer, one main course, etc., but all will be arranged in tables of 4) and that the vegetarian alternatives are listed under the main courses. The chef will happily prepare the vegetarian alternatives for a minimum of two people.

A few important observations:
  1. I am closing the RSVP on January 15, because I have to call the restaurant and make a final reservation. In view of the additional price and food selection information, please update your RSVP indicating whether you would like the regular or the vegetarian option. As said, the veggie option will be available only if chosen by minimum 2 people.
  2. Although we said 20 people, there is possibly room to squeeze in a few more, but the absolute maximum is 24 people - if we reach that number, no more available spots and that's final (I don't make the rule, the restaurant does).
  3. Since, as you look in the restaurant menu, the main courses range from CHF 27-42 each, I think that a full menu for CHF 50 is not a bad deal.
For any questions, please feel free to post in the thread. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Chef recommendation:

Appetiser
Korean Radish Soup
Ghimbab : Korean sushi (vegetarian sushi)
Kunmandu : Korea pan fried dumpling, stuffing beef, vegetable, glass-noodle

Vegetarian alternative:
Korean Radish Soup
vegetarian spring roll

Main Course
Tschaptsche : vegetarian glass noodle
Bulgogi : marinated and pan fried barbecued sauce of slices of beef
Dakbokkum: Pan fried slices of chicken breast with vegetables in spicy sauce
Tangsujuk: Deep fried slices of chicken served with sweet & sour sauce

Vegetarian alternative:
Tschaptsche : vegetarian glass noodle
Jatschebokkum : vegetables with mushroom
Tubutangsujuk: Deep fried Tobu served with sweet & sour sauce

Side dishes
Rice
Kimchi : Spicy Korean pickled Chinese Cabbage
Namul : Delicately seasoned vegetables

Dessert
3 various fresh fruits

Re: The A-Z of Dining in Zürich

So with this new development, there is no longer the choice of "off the menu" as well as the "special menu"--right?

I am asking only for clarification purposes since before (in your original description) it seemed that he would let you do either...

The menu looks great to me, so I am excited and hope the SO will let "us" come.

PS-I copied the list as it is now, with the original 24 confirmed. That way if people start changing their RSVPs and the order of "yes's" changes, it won't be confusing as to who was on the original list (especially since numbers are tight)... That way if (when) more than 24 sign up, there will be no issues with who should come. Just pm'ed it to you.

Correct, sorry for the misunderstanding. I have updated the information accordingly, thanks for pointing out!

Thanks! I had the same idea (great minds think alike? ), this way we avoid confusion.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

The owner did not mention anything of the sort, but I will check to make sure. If we need a deposit, I will let you all know and PM bank details so you can pay.

All: if you haven't already done so, please don't forget to update your RSVP and let me know if you want vegetarian, otherwise I will assume you want the regular one.

Karl, Roshan, I would really love to meet you, but the restaurant said absolutely no more than 24. I am leaving you as provisional "yes" here in case someone cancels, but if not, I am afraid I can't include you. Let's wait a few days and see. Hope you'll understand.

Sure, I understand. I suggest you ask for 50 CHF up front via bank transfer to really firm up the exact number. You just need to say you bank name and IBAN number, nothing else.

Karl, Roshan...you.are.in.

Sorry Federica, something has come up. And knowing there were two others interested to take our spots, I figured it would still be alright. I hope so at least.

Have a great time! Can't wait to hear all about it.

Thanks for this Dylan, very thoughtful of you! I received replies from most people, either through amended RSVP or PM, except a couple. We are almost there!!!

Important information regarding deposit (a.k.a. playing "bad cop"): the restaurant does not require a deposit, hence I am not asking you all to send me one.

However, since they will be purchasing/preparing food for the number of people we tell them to, if you say you're coming, I EXPECT TO SEE YOU THERE! We are all reasonable adults and I am hoping that, exceptions made for unpredictable events, we can stick to this simple plan.

Now, "good cop" - I am so excited to go and see all of you!!!

Want to take my place? There is a chance I might not be able to attend so I'd rather give my spot to someone who is 100%.
