City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Coffee/Chat
Meeting Point: Kafischnaps

Dear all,

I am pleased to announce the first meeting of the Zurich Book Club!

As our first book, will be reading Midnight's Children, by Salman Rushdie.

Meeting time is at 19:00 at Kafishnaps, Kornhausstrasse 57, 8037 Zürich. I picked this place because it is open on Sunday evening until midnight (not that we'll be there that long, but it's nice to know we don't have to rush).
I will book a table once I have a better idea of how many are coming.

Hope to see you all there!

Re: Zurich Book Club

another suggestion for a more accessible and "popular" library with a good selection of literature including english fiction is the Pestalozzi Bibliothek in the Zähringer Str., just a few steps away from the Zentralbibliothek Federica mentioned.
http://www.pbz.ch/
incidentally, this appears to be the only rushdie book they don't have in english...

I think the book is a nice choice. I read it a long, long time ago and will be happy to read it again.

Yes a great choice

Disappointed to be missing the first session (but not disappointed that I get to go on holiday to Chile!), but will read the book and contribute the bookclub thread

Guys, I am so excited for this! It will be great - the in-person discussions, the online discussions, and most of all reading (or re-reading) some great books!

Thanks to Venice for the library info!

Re: Zurich Book Club

So I went to the *other* book club today and it was fun

I was worried that I wouldn't have much to say (which may come as a surprise to some people....) but once everyone starts talking about it there's always lots of interesting things to talk about.

I walked past KafiSchnaps on the way home and it was pretty busy. Depending on how many of you there are it might be worth turning up a wee bit early to make sure you get a table.

Re: Zurich Book Club

So, er, do I have to read Wretched Rushdie's book if I want to sit around a table with a bunch of literate, nebbish hot chicks or could I get away with just turning up with my Matthew McConaughey tight shirt and enjoy the evening sipping whiskey and admiring the view?

Everybody is welcome, always. Of course, if you read the book, you might find it more fun

We're doing sub strata discourse analysis with the compelling, challenging and top 3 US chart busting ghost written autobiographical 'Thank You and You're Welcome' from internationally lauded cultural commentator Mr Kanye West.

it seems like we hot literate chicks have one reason more for tackling Wretched Rushdie...
come on, you're dying to show how deeply intellectual you are

Hi Ellen,

We will decide who will pick the second book and the meeting time/place on the first meeting. We will then post the book title and the new appointment on the calendar, so you will know.

Do join us the next time!

Ach, you forgot "nebbish".

I plan to form a splinter group; instead of sitting around talking about imaginary figures and how they talked to each other, we'll be talking to each other as if we were figures in a book. Personally, I'd like it to be a French book, and I need a Béatrice Dalle character to go with the planned soundtrack. Dialogue heavy.

Interested?

I "forgot" it intentionally because I don't know what it means - is it offensive? I'm looking it up and will answer your proposal only if it turns out to be a compliment...
