City/Town: Thun to Interlaken
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Outside the bunker at 10 am

Only on this day, 4th August 2012, will there be many old ex Military Forts open to the public, all in the Bernese Oberland area, between Thun and Interlaken.

http://festungstag.festung-oberland.ch/

Organisers original map, you need to zoom in on the site of interest,

http://festungstag.festung-oberland....aps/index.html

Artilleriewerk Waldbrand (Beatenberg)

My map of Waldbrand: http://map.search.ch/d/ji4y2uzzd

Infanteriebunker Fischbalmen (Beatenbucht)

Artilleriewerk Faulensee (Faulensee)

Kommandoposten Heinrich (Hondrich)

Infanterie Festungen Berner Oberland (Heiligenschwendi)

I would suggest the Waldbrand, Beatenberg visit. The guided tour costs Fr 12,-- and lasts about 3 hours. This is only suitable for people who can climb stairs.

There is a Post Bus number 10105, leaving SBB station Interlaken WEST, at 09:08 which arrives at Beatenberg Station at 09:40 (This is at the top of the mountain cable car). You then need to walk in the same direction until you reach the bunker, maybe a kilometer.

The bunkers are not marked on the maps! So you need to look out for the location when you are near them. Be aware that they were camouflaged, so the entrance might be in a large house, or a village shop.

Meals can be purchased at Waldbrand on site.

There will also be new army and armored vehicles to see besides the true to the original, large & equipped artillery World War 2 fortress.

  • lost_inbroad - Kinda far ahead...but why the heck not.

This looks really interesting. Is anyone planning to leave from Zurich? There's a 7:02 train out of ZH HB that arrives in Interlaken West at 8:51...

Re: Visit WW2 Swiss defence sites near Interlaken

Hi Sbrinz ..... thank you for this post. I visited Kommandoposten Heinrich (Hondrich) yesterday...it was awesome. By the way, I came to know that these forts are privately owned/maintained by associations formed by a group of people. So rest of the year if anyone feel like visiting them just call up on the numbers provided on websites to make up appointments. They charged me 5CHF for entrance at Kommandoposten and an english speaking voluntary guide accompanied me at no additional cost.

Re: Visit WW2 Swiss defence sites near Interlaken

I went to Beatenberg with 5 friends. There were maybe one hundred visitors altogether. Our group of 10 people were charged SFr 10 each, our guide was the caretaker. He didn't tell us very much and the tour took 2 hours, it was interesting though.
