Looks like the coming weekend promises blue skies and warm temperatures. Good weather for a day trip.

I have been thinking of cycling down from Schaffhausen to Basel along route 2 for a while now, but 125 odd kms in an afternoon looks kinda sorta too ambitious for a not sooo fit a person Plus, a colleague wants to visit the Velomarkt in the morning (it you don't know about the velomarkt, then here is the link), so perhaps something shorter.

The idea is to cycle from Laufenburg to Basel (or at least till Rhinefelden). That is about 60ish kilometers of more of less flat roads. We will be on the national route 2.

The S1 line departs from Basel SBB @ 1250 hrs and reaches Laufenburg at about 1326 hrs. I think the TNW tickets are valid upto Laufenburg, but a cycle will need a supplement. I vaugely remember the cost of a cycle supplement as 7 CHFs.

From Laufenburg we start cycling back towards Basel. My guesstimate: at about 20 kmph average speed. Or in other words, I dont cycle that fast If you feel like it, add your name to list.

Rheinfelden to Basel will take you about 1 more hour if you cycle on the Swiss side, following the national cycle route signs. It takes less time on the road, but is not so nice a ride as the marked one that goes through the back of Pratteln and MUttenz, coming into Basel in the Grun 80 region.

OR: cross to the German side of the river at Rheinfelden and the very nice route n that side is faster than the Swiss side. ( cross the bridge, follow the road straight up - not veering to the right after the underpass - and you soon connect with the German cycle route trail for a left turn.

A friend cycled from Schaffhausen to Laufenburg just last weekend. It took him 4 hours with a camping backpack. Apart from the hill at Neuhausen, it's pretty much flat all the way there.

Carrying a backpack is going to make very little difference to the time. MOre important is the type of bike being used - the type of tyres ( slicks or knobblies, and the gearing on the bike makes a huge diference. Many people will struggle to make more than an average of 15km an hour, whilst others will do the whole distance in half that time.

Ok, so it took 2 hrs 30 mins to cycle from Basel to Laufenburg. Yes, I did it the other way around the gps tells me, I covered 50 Kms, but I did lose my way a fair bit and had to retrace my way back a couple of times.
