I've noticed that a few more people joined our lovely town of Schaffhausen, so I am going to try this again ...
Anyone interested in joining a book club? Mainly fiction - but interesting non fiction can also be considered. Meeting every 4 to 6 weeks - books will be proposed by club members and need to be 'manageable' (nothing with thousands of pages that will require more than 4 weeks to read).

Please answer this thread and let me know if you'll be interested.

We do not read to each other in book clubs; we share our thoughts over the books subject, but I am sure you know that.

As a foreigner you must have also sometimes felt a little bit misplaced and this kind of Verein can lead to amusing conversation and contacts, which are things I miss quite a lot.

I'm interested.

Now this part i find more interesting ...but good idea,the book club,if it leads to amusing conversation and contacts

As it's already been said, the key point of the book club is to discuss a book we have all read - usually over a coffee and cake - or even better a glass of wine (or Spritz) in the evening ... and from there on the discussion usually go on to other more trivial topics.

Crazy Bird, great to know you are interested! I feel less alone!

Bredee, would you be interested? As soon as we have about 4 to 5 people (which I found from experience to be an initial manageable number) we can start. In the meantime .. we can always get together for a chat and a coffee.

I know a few newish ex-pats/new residents, some I'm sure might be interested but aren't on this forum so I'llput the word out. I'm going to be away on holiday for the next week then it's crazy busy at work, will get back to you in a couple of weeks.

I moved to Schaffhausen a year ago but due to intensive travel I have not had any opportunity to get a social life here. The travel has ended now and I'm ready for finding friends and do fun things.

Hi Vackerpixie, thanks for your message! it's great that there are a few people interested, I am planning to wait for a week or 2 - follow up with Crazybird and see how many other people are interested and organize and official event (picking a book, a date etc).

I think the earliest we could meet for book club is end of October (considering that we need to read the book), but I am always up for a drink (when not traveling)!

It seems that we are the same people interessted in the Schaffhausen book club as well as the Schaffhausen German speaking group,more or less.I therefore think we should maybe merge it,like arrange one meeting and start maybe with books,or drinks,or whatever and see how that goes.From there who knows, we could even be a diving club someday,perhaps even a flying club (by that i don't mean pilots,i mean literally developing wings and flying all the way to Greece and meet Apollo and Hercules )! (jk , pls don't frown coz life is too short for that ) .So ValeC,kindly arrange something.
P.s, I will post this also on the book-club thread so don't be upset if you come across this twice

sorry for the delay, the past few weeks have been crazy hectic, but I finally managed to carve out some time and set up the first meeting of the Schaffhausen Book Club - on Thursday November 22nd

For this meeting I picked book I thought it was a quicker option), but going forward we will decide on the next book at the end of the meetings, so everyone will have a chance to propose something and we can read some different styles.

For this month the choice is: The Perks of Being a Wallflowers. I got interested in this book once I started seeing articles about the movie coming up, apparently is a short but interesting coming of age story. It should be fairly easy to find at the Bookstore or on Kindle.

Regarding the location: I will choose a nice cafe/bar in the center of Schaffhausen that stays open between 6 and 8pm - without too much loud music in the background. I will send an update once I know how many people will join.

Quick logistic update. I have found a place were to have our book club meeting, but where I went to update the event I lost all the RSVP.
It's the first time that I organize something and I wasn't aware of this side effect. The Book Club will meet at the Gelateria Da Vinci - Vorstadt 13 Schaffhausen, on Nov 22nd at 6pm as planned.
