What a fantastic turnout last night! We easily had 40 people there.




I think for next time I'll try to get a banner or something similar to hang up that will make us easier to find. My poor little moose was getting lost in the crowd last night!

I just have one suggestion, next time can we move the venue? King Size is over-rated and over priced. Plus the bell is very confusing.

I'm certainly open to suggestions. Do you have any specific recommendations?

To give a bit of background, we've tried a few different places for gatherings. Despite its overpriced beer and okay-but-not-great atmosphere, King Size is the most appropriate venue we've found for our pub nights. We've learned the hard way that the needs of a large group of people that may not know each other very well are quite different from a small group of friends out on the town.

Sit-down venues (e.g. Brasserie de Chateau, la Bossette) are very bad for socializing with large groups of people as it is very hard to mingle when there is fixed seating. Talking to the same person all night long can be a bit tiring. (Pity the person who gets stuck sitting next to me. )

Smaller venues (e.g. the Great Escape) are also not very good for pub nights, as there are now routinely more than thirty people coming out to our meetings. It's not a great atmosphere for socializing and meeting new people when you're packed in like sardines and can barely talk over the music.

Given that people come from outside of Lausanne as well, it's good to have a venue that's reasonably central.

If you can think of any alternative venue that is reasonably large and would allow people who come out to move about relatively easily, and is also in a central location, please let me know. A large selection of beers on tap would be a bonus.

Also, you can announce a pub excursion any time you like. The advantage of organizing a night out is that you get to go wherever you want. I'm happy to forwards social events to the contact list, and if you're terribly unlucky, I might just tag along myself.

I'm just back form Explacement 17, had a great atmosphere tonight. Small, we would indeed dominate the place, but it might be ok for a change. Although there will be no savings in beer tokens...

Its true that most of the places I like in Lausanne wouldn't accomodate a 40+ turn up at all.

What about Tacos bar? It is also in the Flon, not very far from Kingsize.

You have to be a bit brave to go there the first time as it is several floors underground and there is only a doorway at street level, but we could photocopy and stick up some pictures of Heather's moose so that people know they're going the right way!

Once you've gone down two sets of stairs and through a heavy curtain you come out in a huge, well-lit cellar bar. On the left there are loads of tables & chairs, pool tables, a stage and bars. On the right is an area that they can reserve for groups which has its own bar, easily standing room for 40 (& probably loads more) and a few tables & chairs.

Its not generally too noisy to chat or too smoky. I think the bar prices are a bit cheaper than Kingsize.

What do you think?

The Tacos bar sounds promising, I'd be willing to give it a try. What does everyone else think?

Personally am a great fan of the Restaurant & Bar Mañana (Café des Philosophs) next to Payot by the Flon metro stop. They do awesome nachos and draft beer for 3.50 CHF
