Re: Basel weekend cycling group

Hi, I am new to the forums and Basel I ride a MTB, will that do for the ride? Or is it a completelly road bike event? (cycling for 1 or 2 hours side by side with a road bike full speed is a no no on a 2.35" tires)

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

I would say you can join in easily. I'm not that fit myself and my bicycle is certainly not anything special. If there are some speed devils in the group maybe they can take off ahead of us

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

We should meet on the Kleinbasel side of the bridge (Northeast side), above.
Here is a streetview image of where I intend to wait for the others:
http://goo.gl/maps/uYhru
There is more room on the other side of the street as well, if it gets too crowded with all the bikes.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

Just some added info on the route for the 1st week.
Thanks to homesick_alien for the suggestion and plotting it.

http://goo.gl/maps/eE03K

As you can see, the plan is we will be riding for some 50 min (estimated by google maps, which in my impression is a good estimate for a fairly leisurely pace). At the end we cross into Germany, going to Lorrach - bring your documents in case we get stopped at the border.

In Lorrach we will take a break. If no one suggests a different return route, we will return along the route in reverse (i.e. 50 more minutes).

Remember to bring a drink to keep hydrated.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

This route is rather easy (almost completely flat), but it is nice. I think it won't take longer than 30-35 minutes to Lörrach.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

Hi again everyone.

The forecast gives a chance of rain, so you may want to be prepared for that.

See you tomorrow at 9:30 (starting time).

Current prediction (it keeps changing!) is for no rain; perfect cycling weather in fact. Have fun.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

For the event on the 8th, I'm open to suggestions!

I'm thinking... We could start in Burgfelderplatz and go to Schloss Bottmingen and then go on a bit more (at least on google maps it seems it only takes 20 min to get there).
http://goo.gl/maps/IUKR6
So possible go on a bit more into Moosholz or something before coming back.

Has anyone been to that part, would it be a pleasant route?

I used to live in Binningen and did that route on my way to work, I would say its not even 20 mins (I'm not fast). In addition, I would suggest a steady climb up to the Wasserturm in bruderholz (great view of Basel from the tower). Then back down reservoirstrasse to gundeli. Should take about 1-1.5h depending on whether there's a stop at the wasserturm.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

What about taking a different route back?

http://goo.gl/maps/CId7M

Looks feasible under 2 hours (google reports it as 1 hour, but I'm not sure how they handle climbing in their time estimates).

This way we get to pass along the zoo, Schloss Binningen, the Water tower, Merian garten, the river Birs, and then a bit along the Rhein. Should be pleasant I think.

We can also reverse and go on the opposite direction. Or close the loop.

Looks good, I'll know if I can make it by Saturday pm.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

There is a Denner near the proposed starting place:

http://goo.gl/maps/AhYgH

It appears to have a bit of cover that I could wait in, in case of rain.
If at least one person wants to go cycle tomorrow, I will be waiting there for the tour.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

Just in case there are people that didn't reply to the thread that are going (like last week), as I'm apparently alone this week, I won't be waiting at the meeting point. I'll go for a ride but elsewhere and at a different time

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

Ok another week, another ride. I maintain the one suggested by Caroline for the 15th as I think nobody did it this previous Sunday.

P.S. I went for a ride on the morning of the 8th and arrived completely dry :P
It ended up not raining for the duration.

Unfortunately I can't make it this coming Sunday either... but hope something can get set up for the following weekend (22nd), because I'll finally be able to come along.

Re: Basel weekend cycling group

Actually on sunday there is a SlowUP event (more info here http://www.basel-dreiland.ch/), where the trafic is going to be closed on certain routes in the Basel and the vicinity. Here is the exact map http://www.basel-dreiland.ch/?Route_2013 . The shortest route - 20km is perfect for us I would say, and it takes us on a new route. Would anyone be interested in doing that. The weather forcast looks positive for now
