City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Nooba (Kreuzplatz 5)

Calling all EF cyclists out there.... It's time to get together!!
Mountain bikers, Roadies... Anyone who loves biking is welcome.

Ideally it would be for a bike ride, but since it's still quite dark in the evenings after work (not to mention kinda cold), at least we can get together and talk about biking. C'mon, you can admit it's your favorite pasttime when you're not on the bike!

It would be great to put some faces to forum names, and to share plans for biking this coming spring/summer... weeknight group rides, weekend outings, biking events ... as well as where the best bike shops are for maintenance or purchasing new gear (yes, bike geek talk is definitely allowed ).

At least drop by on your way home from work... Or stay for dinner if you have time.

Hope to see you there!

(Nooba is a non-smoking restaurant. We have a reserved space at the bar area.)

At your meeting this past week was there any discussion of a group ride on Saturday, March 15th to take advanatage of the warm weather? How about a 3 hour ride from Zurich through either :

1) Hirzel/ Barr/ Zug /Sattel/ Aegeri
2) Lachen/ Sattellegg/ Sihlsee?

hmm, interesting, just a detail question, is Sattellegg pass open already? Better question, is does it close?

Sattelegg is pretty low, so I would imagine it is open. If it is one of the Sattels here then it is for sure.

Thanks, that is it, I think, I believe it is open. I did that pass several times last year, it is a great low level pass next to Zurich and was very little traffic on side coming from Seideln. It isn't a crazy hard climb but I do recall the last five K was pretty steep. at least for me, not be the lightest bloke in the world.

To my knowledge Sattelegg pass is open given its low altitude and lack of snow this year...should not be a problem.

Cheers Chris,
I am pretty sure the bike comes with a standard double, and you are correct I want a triple or compact, preferably a triple. My thinking on this though was with the bike at such a good price I could easily swap out the standard double for a compact, or speak nicely to the guys in CRC when I order it, and see if they would ship it with a compact instead. I think it would be too much of a pain in the ass to change from a double to a triple since I need to change the derailler and shifter too (I think, correct me if I am wrong).

As for construction, at that price I rekon its Alu, a carbon bike in that price range would not inspire me with confidence. I have had too many carbon failures when windsurfing, don't want to have one at 80km/h on a paved road.

Auf English bitte??

In principle sounds great. Unfortunately as Saturday is the last day of the six nations, I'll have to allow you guys to expose my lack of fitness on another occasion. Hope to be able to join ye next time.

Unfortunately I have experienced first-hand just how easily a carbon frame can crack when contacting pavement, going down a high-altitude mountain pass in Colorado

The "BeOne" website from the link says it's "Xtrolite aluminium" frame, with a carbon fork. That is a good combination that I rode for years (minus the "Xtrolite") before I got my ti ride, which was a bit more expensive! Seems like a good deal.

I definitely would have planned a ride for this Saturday if I were free - The weather looks great! I have friends visiting for a couple weeks, but plan to be posting many rides after that...

I suggest you start a thread for it - Based on the amount of cyclist interest we've seen on this forum and from the meeting this week, I bet you'll find others who'll join you. Wish I could. Have fun!

Correct. You'd need to change both front and rear derailleurs, the front shifter, and the crankset, so the bike wouldn't be worth buying if you want a triple. CRC may switch the standard double for a compact, but I wouldn't be too hopeful of that.

Regarding the discussion of which passes are already open, you can check the current status of all passes on the TCS website.

Hillseeker: Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I do not have the ability per the Adminsitrator to start a new post/thread for some reason that I am unable to understand. I would be grateful if a fellow cycling member could post the following as a new thread:

Road Ride Saturday, March 15 9:00 AM

At your meeting this past week was there any discussion of a group ride on Saturday, March 15th to take advanatage of the warm weather?

How about an approximate 3 hour ride starting from the Hotel Alexander (Thalwil on Seestrasse) at 9AM via:

1) Hirzel/ Barr/ Zug /Sattel/ Aegeri
2) Lachen/ Sattellegg/ Sihlsee
3) Pfaffikon/ Etzel/ Raten Aegeri
4) other?

Early in the year so the pace should likely be moderate!

Hope to see you there. I am open as to the start time and routes, so please post any alternative suggestions, but would enjoy the company.

Mike

Excuse my ignorance on many things road... ...but why the rear derailleur too?

Re: Cyclists Meet-up in Zurich

The rear derailleur would need to be changed because otherwise it wouldn't have enough 'capacity' to take up the chain slack when you go into the smallest chainring. You can see photos of the two Ultegra versions on the CRC website here, and the capacity specs are listed in full for the Dura Ace versions here, the 'SS super short cage' is for double cranksets (standard or compact), and the 'GS short cage' is for triples. For more info, see Sheldon Brown's glossary entry for derailleur capacity.

Thanks Chris, I had a moment of ...Doh... shortly after posting that when I realised that I would need a longer derailleur arm to cope with the smaller inside ring.

I will now go to the back of the room and put on a pointy hat with a big "D" on it!

Re: Cyclists Meet-up in Zurich

Hillseeker and I have been adding to the list of cyclosportifs for 2008 based on the thread: Bicycling: long-distance, mass-participation rides. We have put together a table that lists the events in and around Switzerland and includes all of the important information in one place: date, location, distance options, number of participants in last year's event, registration deadline, and other comments.

We passed around some copies of this at the meet-up this week, and now we wanted to put it online. I tried several methods of putting the table directly into EF, but there is not enough control of the formatting to do so. Instead, I gave the table it's own web-page. So, please visit it here.

We eagerly welcome suggestions of additions or corrections to this list, but please respond to the Bicycling: long-distance, mass-participation rides thread and not to this one, providing as much information as you can.
