There will be an open mic night at the Kaufleuten in Zurich on 8 November 2006. It is a bit like Karaoke, but there is a live band, and the singers have to make it through an audition. If you want to audition, hurry up, the audition is on October 29 at 3 in the Kaufleuten Lobby.

I have already got my ticket, but as there is a standing and a seating area, we do not have to get tickets together but still can stand together. So far, there is three of us. I will wear something black and a red/orange scarf.

When: November 8, 2006; doors open at 8 p.m., start is at 9 p.m.

Just a quick review for those who might consider viewing or performing at some point: I had been a little concerned about the Karaoke aspect of the evening, not being sure what quality to expect. Well, don't worry - the performers were very professional, some of them performing their own songs, some singing classics. The band has 9 members and is really good, too. And if you want to perform: The audience was very supportive and positive.

All in all: A relaxed and good performance. Oh, and if you join the myspace area of the openmic, tickets are CHF 15 instead of 25.

Did you get the impression that the performers were regulars ? I recently went to a jazz "jam" night (every Wed at jazzbarrage.ch), and I got the impression that the performers were simply a band by another name.

Its really a question of whether you see these events from a performing perspective or from that of a budding musician/performer. The audience want quality (as does the venue manager, I'm sure) and the performers want the opportunity. It would be a shame if innovation were stilted by an event with no rough edges or risk...

How often are these open sessions being held ?

It was my first time, so that I cannot really say. But I had the impression that there were definitely some regulars, based on the reactions of the audience, but I also think there were some newbies. In total, there were 17 performers, and all of them were good, some even brought their own background singers or performed their own material. I was under the impression that they were rather serious about it.

The events are held once a month, auditions are 10 days before the event.

I have read that this will be the last open mic at Kaufleuten.
