Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

Hi,

Can't come this time but next week maybe. Just a question.

Is there a mother-tongue German speaker in the group and what is the average level of most participants.

K

For those coming the first time here is a Michelin map with the exact address of the bar.

I just forgot to ask. Does this event really start at 17:30? Because if so, I can't make it. I'll PM you and bid you to call me with this info. Thanks, Nelly

Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

Thanks for organizing this, JPH! It was nice to meet you and BaselLife tonite, and thank you for putting up with my German (or rather lack thereof ). It is exactly what I need to do if I'm ever going to get better at speaking, plus it's more fun than sitting in a classroom!

Sorry I had to leave early (although I think I used up all the words I know) and didn't get to meet the rest of you. Hopefully next time. Now I am motivated to learn more (Ich bin motiviert!).

Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

Hi,

I enjoyed this evening and it is always fun to speak in German. Unfortunately, I don't speak German as regularly as I used to. By the way learning the language takes time and you do reach a plateau where you think you will get no better but it is just an illusion.

You don't have to be perfect in language but being able to communicate with people in their own language breaks down many barriers and opens many doors.

Have fun
Martin

Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

As a native speaker I might make an appearance at a future event... as long as its not in the Nelson ...

Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

I am so upset that I was unable to join you last tonight! I ended up having to work till 20:30

Are we now meeting weekly or every 2 weeks. I want to now plan things in way advance so that I can actually say no if someone needs me to work for them so late! I so want to make my german kick ass and this is going to be the best way. Thanks, Nelly

Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

Hi,

yes it was quite amusing to be speaking german in an "english speaking" bar. Where would suggest that would make more sense ?

Have fun

Martin

Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

Hello Everyone,

What does everyone think.

A. Weekly German Conversation Sessions

OR

B. German Conversation Sessions every 2 weeks

Or what were you thinking John?

Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

either one works for me!
I have 2 people from my german class who are going to come with me as well the next time, seems we're all in the same boat...doing alot of reading and listening, but not nearly enough speaking

Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

Even though I probably should do this weekly to learn faster, I'd probably only be able to join every other week or so due to schedule - plus I just need to learn more vocabulary so I have more to be able to talk about and understand!

It would be nice to find a bar that isn't quite as loud, since that makes it even harder to me... Don't know exactly where but will keep my eyes and ears peeled for a good one around the city.

Re: German Conversation in Zurich...

Hello everyone,

I'm Swiss, native languages are german (and spanish). Originally from Basel, now in Zürich for professional reasons.

I've been living for 2 years in Boston ('05-'07) and I enjoyed meeting there many international people, a habit I want to continue in Switzerland. That's also the reason why I was browsing in this forum. ;-)

If you guys plan to meet for another upcoming german conversation meeting, I might help you to get rid of stubborn, die-hard grammar errors. Guess after 1 hour people will start having headaches anyway (which you can alleviate with beer/wine later on) but "no pain, no gain" or as the romans said "per aspera ad astra". ;-)

German is tough (not to mention Schwizerdütsch), but don't give up.

best,
Herbert
