City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Coffee/Chat
Meeting Point: private home in Zurich

We held the first FEBESESWI in December 2014, and had good time.
Thanks to all who joined us.
This is a warm invitation to:
FEBESESWI-2

FEEL BETTER about SETTLING in SWITZERLAND

WHY ARE WE MEETING?
Lonely, culture-shocked, bored or weary?
Happy to be in Switzerland?
And most likely here to stay?
This get-together is for people who are trying to find their way living in Switzerland, who might be feeling lonely or cut off from their familiar world. There is evidently a real need to lament (and I think that makes sense, and yes, it has its place), and we’ll especially be sharing ideas to try to feel better.
It is also for people who have found useful ways to settle in Switzerland, and who’d like to share from their experience of making it work.
Of course I don't have all the answers! But I do speak, read and write German fluently, and live here permanently; I’m so-called “integrated”. Disclaimer: While you are here, I am very likely to affirm: “Learn the local language” because, in my journey towards feeling less foreign, EVERYTHING I ever tried worked much, much better for being able to communicate with people from here.
I hope that other long-termers with a command of German, and local Swiss folk, will join us and contribute to a better understanding of Swiss structures and help to open possibilities. Lonely or bored folks who are really here for only a few months are very warmly welcome, too, for the company.
Our determined focus will be on how to settle into life in Switzerland, (for however long you’re here) practically, culturally and emotionally.

WHEN:
Tuesday 24th February from 17h (also fine to arrive later) into the evening

WHOM TO BRING:
  • Yourself, and anyone you like (perhaps from your German class) and, if you would like to, your partner (also fine to join us later).
  • Naturally, babies and children are very welcome, as I trust you will bring along, and do for them, whatever they need to feel comfortable, so that we can still do our “work”.
WHAT TO BRING: (please see also CATERING)
  • links, pamphlets, books, tips you have found helpful up till now, for coping in Switzerland, or as an immigrant, or as a stay-at-home-spouse, or as a growing person.
  • any documents, instructions, etc. that you can’t read and hopefully those of us who understand German will be able to explain them to you.
WHAT WE’LL DO:
  • Talk, either just socially, or in a more formal meeting structure (depending on who turns up, and how we feel on the day)
  • Commiserate
  • Specify the needs
  • Brainstorm on what could help
  • Try to answer specific questions
  • Swap coping strategies, teach each other cultural, organisational or psychological steps that have actually helped anyone to feel better
  • Think through the pros and cons of potential endeavours
  • Work towards realistic expectation management
  • Collect (on paper, from the internet), share and structure information about all sorts of things on offer in Zurich and surrounds (or Switzerland in general)
  • Search for contacts for interests you already have, but haven’t found here, yet
  • Laugh
  • Eat
WHAT THIS IS NOT:
  • This event is NOT a therapeutic session.
  • This event is NOT a marketing opportunity for any particular group, school, business, organisation, philosophy or religion.
  • This is not a place for abusive behaviour.
  • No drugs.
  • No smoking inside.
CATERING:
Sorry, I won’t provide any. Seriously. I also don’t pledge to tidy up/decorate before you arrive J. Please bring anything you’d like to eat or drink, just for yourself or to share, as it suits you. And while you’re here, please help yourself and/or serve the others present. Thanks very much. Kitchen infrastructure is here, for anyone who’d like to use it.

WHERE:
In my home in Zurich-Affoltern (not to be confused with Affoltern-am-Albis). It is very easily reached by public transport. Parking is very limited (“blue zone”), and fines are issued swiftly to anyone who parks illegally.
The address, phone number, and instructions on how to get here will be mailed to those who register.

Re: FEBESESWI-2 = FEEL BETTER about SETTLING in SWITZERLAND

Please note that this Event will not take place on the date planned.
I'm considering it indefinitely postponed.

Last time many people registered as "yes" and "maybe" and many more wrote to say they would have liked to have joined us, but that date didn't suit them.
This time there have been very few registrations, so maybe that means this isn't the right time for such a FEBESESWI get-together, or perhaps - and that would be much better - it means that many more folk are feeling content about their settling in Switzerland and, at the moment, don't need this kind of help.

I may well offer to revive this Event later, if there ever seem to be (as there were just before the first FEBESESWI) a lot of people posting on the Forum about how lonely, bored, or culturally disoriented they were feeling. If that happens again later, by all means, let's meet then, to work towards feeling better about settling in Switzerland.

All the best to everyone!

487 people viewed your offer and only 2 accepted, I feel for you. People are very fickle these days, why can't they just say they are coming? Thanks for trying!

I dislike the maybees, as you have to chase them up to see if they have decided to come after all. Not many people are sent away without notice. For me it is best to either accept the invitation or decline, there is a useful reminder function on the top right side.
