29.05.2008 18:30 to 20:30
*The times shown may change, depending on DST settings
City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: To be Determined

I propose that the lycra wearing crowd get together for a little ride through the nearer Zuri Oberland area.

Approximate time: 1.5 to 2 hours (maximum)
Bike: Limited to Road Bikes (or maybe a light Touring/hybrid)
Speed: As slow or as fast as you want to go (within limits)

I will take it as the ride leader this time around. Though, for the mountain goats out there, my leadership may be from far behind and may need to set meeting points along the route. Will see how it goes.

Two alternative proposals, depending on where people are coming from, will decide near the event day.

Alternative 1:

Meeting Point: Zurihorn Casino parking lot
Route: Up Kusnacht Road past RumeSee to Forch, up to Guildenen then down to top of Wetzwill hill to Forch down to Egg, and up to Pfannenstiel to Wetzwill (either down to Herrliberg) or up to Forch.

Alternative 2: Meilen Ferry Landing Sport

Route: Back to Herrliberg, up Wetzwil up to Guildennen down to Forch, down to Egg, up to Pfannenstiel down to Wetzwil, down to Herrliberg or up to Forch (depending on final destination)
RSVP'd Yes: 2 (2 members and No guests)
  • dakman
  • Eire - I'm in, So long as Salsa refrains from wearing pink. ;-)
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

My weatherforecast is a little more optimistic. I'll try to make it, but can't promise that I'll be able to keep up on the climbs in particular.

Because then it wouldn't be a Thursday evening ride .

And I for one make an effort to get away from the Zurich region and see a bit of the country most weekends. These rides are perfectly accessible for during the week, weekends are for exploring further afield.

Above, I posted the route from Herrliberg that I did a few weeks back with Hillseeker, the first two bumps on the elevation map would be the route we would cover (more or less)

And Eire, I don't think you will have trouble keeping up with me, I don't have a very classic climber's build (at 85 kilos)

Cheers Dakman,

Its not so much the elevation that I have a problem with but more the pace on the climbs. I managed to tackle Sattelegg from Uster on Sunday, so I will make the climbs no problem, I just might be a little off the pace.

That reminds me, have you had issues with Motorbikes on Sattelegg before? I nearly got run off the road 3 times. Once a biker overtook a VW Van on a blind corner, in an effort not to hit the biker the van missed my handlebars by about 2 inches.

I am not feeling strong these days, the pollen is killing me.

Actually i was about to post a ride description of Sattelegg (later today). Yeah, motorcycle traffic is a problem on weekends on most passes. Cars are okay but I hate the motorcyclists as they seem to think they can throw caution to the wind and that they can get around anything.

That is one nice advantage of moutain biking.

Pace won't be a problem, I don't go fast, I just try to survive. This is one reason I was hesitant to lead a ride, not sure how effectively I can lead from behind. But for any speed demons the route is rather simple, just need to have meeting milestones.

Easiest for me too, so would agree to Zurihorn.

Meilen - is easier if someone is coming from the other side or up the lake.

Looks to me like the remaining stages play nicely to Contadors strengths.

The only reason for a bloke to wear Pink on a bike is if he is leading the Giro...

I have to say, that for someone who was not prepared for the event and up to one week before was not supposed to be in it, Contador found his pink helmetn, glasses, shoes and gloves very quickly.

Re: Initial Road Biking Ride in Zurich Area

LQQ - plan to make it regular...probably need to find some more 1.5 to 2 hour routes though.

Alright, seems that Zurihorn will the meeting place. I will send those signed up my cell by Pmm tomorrow in case we don;t meet up. I won;t be wearing pink but a flashy orange jersey.

For those like me who have had trouble keeping up with this years Giro on TV, SBS Australia puts together a nice 8 minute daily review on their webpage (see "Video Highlights").

by the way, if you want live coverage of the giro via the internet, go to

www.cyclingfans.com. They have browser that interlinks the RAI television coverage with the Eurosport commentary in English (as the Eurosport doesn't stream properly if I recall).

Re: Initial Road Biking Ride in Zurich Area

The official meeting point for any late joiners is Zurihorn Casinoparking lot (right after the China garden), right at the corner (on the road, rights side) after the stop light coming from Zurich. I will have on a orange jersey.
