City/Town: Klausen Pass
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Hauptbahnhoff

http://www.tds.ch/tourdesuisse/strecken.html

On Saturday June 21st, the Tour of Switzerland has a mountain time trial up Klausen pass, I propose a ride up the mountain to watch the events and cheer on your favorite pro. More specifics to follow on which trains and which side of the pass we would climb.

Pass statistics can be found http://www.climbbybike.com/climb.asp...ountainID=5397

It is a 24 km climb with total climbing 1500 meters uphill. I expect it will take me about 2 hours. Though, I am sure the 'fit' among us can do it much faster and the pro's will probably knock it out in an hour.

Re: Tour of Switzerland (Klausen Pass)

Just bumping this up for you :-)

2 hours is a reasonable time for a non-stop roadbike ride from Altdorf to the top of the pass. If you think you'll take breaks along the way, you might want to allow 2.5 hours.

Re: Tour of Switzerland (Klausen Pass)

thanks, well I usually don't like to stop at least for more than a minute, then the legs start hurting.

Also, will need to decide whether the Altdorf of Glarus side is better. I am not sure how they handle pro time trials here and when they will shut the road to the public. usually in France, it is maybe 2 hours before.

Re: Tour of Switzerland (Klausen Pass)

just checked the teams for tour de Suisse. All major guns will be there including Silence lotto, the teams Cadel Evans rides for. He is surely a favorite for this years Tour de France. I will try to join you for the climb but again I have to find a bike and that remains a hassle. But lets see.

Re: Tour of Switzerland (Klausen Pass)

Fluelen might make sense, I know the pro's are going up from Altdorf so might be easier to come up the other side. I am hoping to go recon the course tomorrow if the weather isn't too bad.

if anyone is free and wants to climb pm me, it will be early morning train to start

I think I have been confused this whole time, thinking Fluelen was on the opposite of Altdorf, silly me. We probably will do it from the Altdorf side, though I like the switchbacks at the top from Linthal side. Anyhow it should be good fun, it took me about 2 hours 10 to get the top at a very easy pace without stops, very slow, as I said I think I need a half hour head start.

Re: Tour of Switzerland (Klausen Pass)

Hello, I'm from the US and going to be in Zurich for a business meeting on Thursday the 26th. I'd like to visit the race on the 25th, but have never been to Switzerland and don't know where to go for assistance. Found this form on Google and thought I'd ask for help. Are there any companies that can arrange a one day tour? post here or email at: aaron [@] jobing [.] com

Thanks much for your assistance.

The TDS ends on the 22nd so you might have trouble finding a upstanding company to assist you to get to it .

I think you will have trouble finding a tour company to get you there. TDS is not that big and Switzerland is sort of a do it yourself type of place

Switzerland is a very easy place to get around, even if you only speak English, what day would you like to go?

That day, most of the stage takes place pretty far from Zurich, ends in the Ticino area, which is probably at least a three hour trip. They are going over the Lukmanier pass that day but pretty early in the day. The 17th they are much closer to Zurich but it is a more flat stage also. Have a look here if you haven't yet.

Re: Tour of Switzerland (Klausen Pass)

The best day to see a stage would actually be the mnt. top finish on Flumserberg on Sunday the 15th , that is only about an 1h 15m by train and gondola. I might if the weather is decent, cycle up there on Sunday.

I am not sure about the not keen about cycling uphill part? I expect on MTB it is probably 2 to 3 hoursof straight uphill climbing.

A mountain bike would probably be okay just might take you a little longer to get to the top. if you don't mind the fast road riders going off ahead..the fast road bikers will be waiting at the summit with a beer for you when you get there.....

Re: Tour of Switzerland (Klausen Pass)

We're in! Is the plan to watch the stage from partway up, or will we be braving the crowds in the finish area? Given that we'll all have bikes in tow, I was thinking that a few km from the finish might be better than at the top, which will be a bit cramped.

What does everyone else think?

Heather

probably makes sense a few km's from the bottom, I am trying to remember where the steepest nastiest part is?

Edit: Sorry i meant to say a few km's from the top (that must have been my sore legs talking)

Re: Tour of Switzerland (Klausen Pass)

I'm getting excited for the event, but I think its time to talk logistics. I just found the info on the Tour de Suisse website. The first rider will leave Altdorf at 15h00, and the last rider should reach the top at around 18h40. The road up from Altdorf will be closed from 14h00. But I don't know what that means exactly - for instance, if you are two thirds of the way up on a bicycle at 14h00, then do you have to stop pedaling immediately? Probably not. I expect it means that the top and bottom of the passes will close then and some vehicles will go up and down to clear off everyone left on the road during the next hour.

Therefore, what time should we start our ride up? Or, at least, what time should we aim to meet at the top to ride down to a good viewing spot? I think I'll hope to take about 1h45 for the climb. However, if I take a little extra weight (camera and beer) then that might slow me down.

It looks like the Wassen side will remain open for people to drive up and park, and then take a shuttle service to the top. For billie, you can avoid all exertion by taking a shuttle bus all the way up from Altdorf (the specific location is Altdorf Kollegi, but I don't know where that is) leaving at either 10h00 or 11h45, but that seems a bit early to me.
