City/Town: Basel
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: St Jakobs Tramstop

Hi all,

Inspired by the other cycling events popping up, and having a great sunday cycle myself, I thought I would test the waters here in Basel with a leisurely ride/tour around the Basel Region.

Currently planning to head from St Jakobs along the Birs until Dornach then some other route back toward town. The route would be mostly on cycle paths (and part of one of the National routes) and not remotely hilly ( - start easy - we can see about hills later....)

Not a timed road race or offroad course, and aimed at all cycling abilities, young and old, who wish to explore the region / do something different aside Curry or Beer (although a beer after wouldn't go completely amiss).

Any questions just post below or PM me,

Pat

  • Dodger - Good idea, but out of town this weekend
  • Running man - I would like to join , but it is the night of the Basel city firm run 2008 and I have entered this. It starts at St Jakobs and runs 6K around this area, you should avoid it as I understand around 1000 are running and normally many spectators. Any futu...
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

Yay, no rugby for a while so it looks like I'll finally be able to join in.

There was some talk a while ago about cycling round Basel so hopefully the same people are still out there and we can get a group together.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

We rode some of the paths along the Birs on Saturday... some parts on the western side are quite overgrown, and with blackberry vines (i.e.: very spiky). Don't think we went as far south as Dornach though... maybe. It was still passable though.

Anyway, I'm happy to try it.

UPDATE: Looks like at least some of the overgrowth has been trimmed! Woohoo!

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

great idea, if this develops in Basel and Lausanne and Geneva, in the future we can have a big Swiss cycling Jamboree one weekend....

English speaking Cyclists of Switzerland unite or something like that.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

Sunday? 8.7.2008 is a Tuesday; and Sunday 6th is the Schützenmatt BBQ.

But if you're just looking testing the waters; I'm in, in principle - dodgy knee (from too much cycling!) so something easy is welcome.

Edit: Oh, YOU had a great Sunday cycle -- ok, a bit slow here. Got it.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

Ok, maybe not my clearest post/event listing. But the date on the calender is correct and this event is taking place a Tuesday evening (this time) - one week after the curry night .

Resident, if you really do have a spare bike I'd really love to borrow it so I can tag along. Beers on me in exchange

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

Hi,

Just a small update.

Still planning to meet at the St Jakobs Tram stop on Tuesday as cannot find any mention on basel.ch etc of the "Basel city firm run" so I think we should still try and meet here. However if it turns out that one cannot cycle any where near the stadium tramstop , then would suggest meeting infront St Jabobs Halle nearer the 36 Bus stop (about 100m round the corner).

If there is a run - we should still be able to cycle on the route I have half planned, as it is part of one of the 9 National routes, and cannot be closed very easily

I'll PM out my mobile tomorrow to those 'yes' people readay for any problems :-)

Also, even if overcast, cold with light rain, I will still be cycling. only heavy rain or miserable drizzle will stop play .

Pat

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

I'm in Resident I'll give you a call this evening to organise collecting the bike from you. Thanks again, you are a star

Pat, any chance you can text me a reminder tomorrow (you know how ditzy I can be ) as I am not in the office all day and still have no access to the internet?

p.s. I have not done a bike ride in years so I am very out of practise!! The last encounter I had with a bike ruined my best jeans and my poor knee!! (Not even a drink involved!!!)

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

Hey everyone,

Been a member for a while but have only accidentally made it to an event, normally the trails of the beer drinking curry club nights!

I would definitely be up for a bike ride, as i always tend to get lost whenever I try to go biking on a trail or the hill gets too steep as my city bike is just not kitted out for that as the gears are dodgy! let me know what date you are thinking of doing it!

Cheers Eleanor (a newbie)

This is not going to be the Tour de France , just a cycle at the pace of the slowest, then when we have had enough head back or home or to a bar. We just see what the group as whole want to do on the night.

Looking forward to it.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

Just noticed RunningMan's "NO" response... apparently there is some event near St. Jakobs tomorrow night?? won't it be packed out to meet?

I am, like mimi, a bit out of practice on the bike, and would prefer to walk my bike through a crowd...

cheers,
brucefan

I'm just trying to figure out how to get to St Jakobs now after realising my idea of taking the tram probably won't work with a bike!!! I have no idea of the road routes and wouldn't want to try facing the trams seeing as it's my 1st time in maybe 8 years on a bike

Re: Basel Evening Cycle

If it helps anyone (Mel) I will be at the SBB to get water etc so can meet to leave right in front of the SBB (next to info signs etc) at 18:30 to then head on cycle tracks to St Jakobs. As for crowds - there will not be then many people and there is more than one way to do the route I have in mind (or we have to walk the first 500m or so)

Pat, I may take you up on meeting at the SBB. I haven't rode a bike since I got my drivers' license.

Not sure how we're getting into town yet, but we'll meet at SBB, I've never been to St Jacob.

Not sure I'm up to 15k into Basel, + <the ride> + 15k back (yeah, I'm a wuss)
