City/Town: Basel
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Basel SBB

Hi all,

Inspired by the other cycling events popping up, and at the last "testing the water" event was agreed we would try another leisurely ride/tour around the Basel Region.

EDIT: There is a football game tonight so St Jakobs is a no go area. Now going to meet at 19:00 in front of the SBB station

Wednesday 23rd July leaving from In front of SBB at 19:00

This time planning to head from St Jakobs down the Birs until the Rhein, then across to Riehen, then a route though Lange Ehren, back toward town.

The route would be mostly on cycle paths and not remotely hilly with a length of about 20/25kms again.

Not a timed road race or offroad course, and aimed at all cycling abilities, young and old, who wish to explore the region / do something different aside Curry or Beer (although a beer after doesn't go completely amiss).

As you can see the last one was great fun and enjoyed by all

Any questions just post below or PM me,

Pat

Yeah Pat, organisation is the key

I actually have a bike now (well tomorrow) with lights, lock, saddle and everything. Only second hand but it will do for rookie Mel

Next on the list is helmet, elbow and knee pads, bubble wrap and mouth guard .....or should that be muzzle

Just got on my bike for the first time today since arriving here in Basel 1 1/2 yrs ago. It felt good! I may go along for this but will see as it gets closer. Hope there will be more of these in the future also.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle 23rd July

I rode up some hill today, 45 minutes go up, and 5 to come down.

Now my hip is sore...

Although I think I'll be right for this ride anyways

Re: Basel Evening Cycle 23rd July

If it helps anyone who does not know how to get to St Jakobs, I will again be at the SBB to get water etc, so can meet to leave right in front of the SBB (next to Euro2008 countdown/info signs/maps etc) at 18:30 sharp, to then head on cycle tracks to St Jakobs.

Also - don't be put of by talk in the thread of hills and Gempen and the like - We are not doing hills!! - just a nice leisurely social cycle , folllowed by a beer/wine/coffee/....

Looking forward to it.

Pat

If you don't find anything before then you can aways rent a bike from the main SBB Bahnhof. 33 CHF or so a day (with it being a little less for those with a halbtax).

Hope you can make it on Wednesday.

Weather looks great for tomorrow:

OK British weather reporting is not renowned for accuracy.....but it is backed up by Swiss efficiency:

Yes the weather is looking great for tomorrow .

Just to note however, even if the weather is less than optimal, then I will still be out for the cycle (with a waterproof). As last time only very heavy rail will stop me heading out for the event

Also those coming, just have a think about which day (Tuesday/Wednesday) is best for the next one - so far we will have done one on each.

Pat

Re: Basel Evening Cycle 23rd July

I'm happy with either Tuesday or Wednesday. The only time it may clash on a Tuesday is with the curry night and I think the girls rugby group play/train on Tuesdays. Jenny am I right about the rugby?

Tuesday is better for me.

The English Group has it's regular weekly get-together at All Bar One on Wednesday evenings.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle 23rd July

Incidentally, I still will check out the ride to Petit Camargue in France and Fünfschilling in Germany.

Petit Camargue is a nicer ride, but Fünfschilling is a family farm restaurant so we can take a break there.

Will keep you informed. Have relatives over these next three weeks, but I'm sure I can find time to try the rides out.

Yeah you're right, we have rugby on Tuesdays and Thursdays so Wednesdays are best for me.

See you all tonight.

I resent being called a 'rugby group', we are a rugby TEAM. We even have shirts and everything.
