City/Town: Lausanne
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Bourdonette metro station

There are now many cyclists on the forum living in Lausanne, so it is about time that we all went for a ride together! There's no time like the present, so let's go this Thursday - the weather looks perfect: 26 degrees and sunny.

I'm suggesting that we start at 6:00pm so that we can have two hours of riding, plus some brief stops, and still get back well before it starts to get dark. However, if this doesn't work for many people then we could maybe push it back by half an hour, but no more.

As well as having a good time hanging out with other cyclists, hopefully we can show each other the nice routes that we know in the region. I'll take care of the route for the first event. We'll head into the farmlands of the Vaudoise plateau towards L'Isle. There won't be any major hills, but there will be a few short, challenging climbs to get the heart pumping. Most of the roads will be quiet, with the obvious exception of the ones getting us out of the city and suburbs.

The pace will be modest, to cater for a wide range of abilities. Please don't be concerned if you are not the fittest, the fastest, or don't have the best bike, there will be others in a similar situation. A road/racing bike or a fast hybrid will be the best kind of bike to use, and we will stay on paved surfaces (someone else is welcome to start a mountain/trail biking group if they prefer that).

Because it is difficult and not enjoyable to ride in the city as a group, and because we'll all be coming from different places, I suggest that we meet on the edge of Lausanne. For this ride, it therefore makes sense to meet at the Bourdonette metro stop, see this map.

After the ride, it may be nice to grab something to drink and/or eat together, but we can discuss that while riding.

I'll announce any changes to the plan in the first response to this thread (changing this main entry wipes out all the RSVPs). If it rains, the ride will be canceled.

Hopefully, we can make this a regular thing, maybe every two weeks, so if you can't make this one (sorry for the short notice) then maybe you can make a later one. There is also a big group ride planned for Saturday, September 6th around Lake Geneva: The Great Annual Ice Cream Cycle Tour of Lake Geneva.

BASIC SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: Bicycle helmet, a properly maintained bicycle with insurance sticker (Swiss velo vignette), sufficient cash for transport should your bike break down, and formal identification. A small set of emergency lights, or something bigger, are also recommended in case we end up later than expected.

CAVEAT: This event is organised with all care, but the responsibilities lie with each individual participant. We have simply named a time and place, the rest is up to you.

RSVP'd Yes: 5 (5 members and No guests) RSVP'd Maybe: 2 (2 members and No guests)
  • Beanum - I work 5 minutes away from Bourdonette so I should be able to make 18.30.. I think Simon has a mobile no. for Chris or Heather so I will let you know if I'm not gonna make it..
  • Vanilla - Very unfit, but would love to try (if I am not there on time, don’t wait for me )
RSVP'd No: 1
  • nzuelzke - Playing tennis this Thursday but glad to see you've started the bike rolling, so to speak!
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Start time officially changed to 6:30pm, but please be there by that time so that we can get going then.
The precise meeting spot will be next to the area where the bus turnaround is at the Bourdonette metro station.

Great idea Chris. I doubt I'll make 6pm this Thursday since I have a meeting at 4 and then have to get home and across town again... if you opt for a slightly later start I should be able to get there...

...providing the pace really is modest . Otherwise I'll see you next time...

My vote is for a 6:30 start as well. (Isn't it funny that the organiser never asked me if 6:00 would be okay? )

Hope to see lots of you on Thursday!

Heather

Given that HeatherM just mailed the Lausanne list saying it's a 6-6.30 start, I'll upgrade my 'maybe' to a (hopeful) 'yes'

I admit that I was exercising a bit of creative license with the start time there based on my own personal and completely biased opinion as to when it ought to start. And now that I've already told people it might begin as late as 6:30, I guess we'll just have to start it then, won't we?

(Funny how that works, isn't it?)

Do you think you'll get chance to see ChrisW before Thursday to let him know?

Looking forward to seeing you all this evening. Don't worry Robban, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Re: First Lausanne Thursday evening bike ride, July 24 '08

It's shaping up to be a great day for a ride! I've decided that another advantage of a 6:30 start is that I can watch the finish of today's stage of le Tour before heading out the door. I love July.

HM

PS-I finally found a cyclist smiley!

I agree, what a great ride! Good pace, a nice mix of climbing, cruising and descending, and the scenery was amazing. (The riding company wasn't half-bad either.) Hopefully it becomes a regular event!
