31.07.2008 18:30 to 23:00
*The times shown may change, depending on DST settings
City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: TBD

This is a challenging and fun ride in the hills just outside of Zurich, that we do (almost) every Thursday... It is intended for cyclists who are experienced with biking hills and looking for a ride to challenge themselves to ride harder than they might on their own (or for the super-fit to push the rest of us!).

Please PM me with your cell number if you're planning to join us if I don't already have it. We can wait a few minutes after 6:30 to start if we know you'll be there soon thereafter...

No ride if raining! Bring lights for your bike if you can - It can get dark toward the end of the ride.

As Hillseeker is off being a tour guide, we will have the ride on Zuri Oberlander side of the lake this week instead for some variety. Meeting point and exact route will be posted later.

Meeting Place: TBD
Start Time: 6:30 pm

Distance: ? About 50K

Climbing: TBD
Ride Time: 2 hours (approx.)

Route Map: TBD

Post-ride drinks & food: Sorry no Hillseeker hospitality this week, but the beer and chicken fried rice at NOOBA is pretty good too.

Small Print: Be sure to wear a helmet! We will be riding on roads with cars and possibly tractors coming directly at you on small paths. Anyone participating in the EF rides are doing so at his/her own risk.

We can possibly move to Wednesday night if too many tied up with Swiss national celebrations on thursday. Let me know your thoughts.

Re: Thursday Night Road Bike Ride (Zurich)

I'm otherwise engaged on Wednesday night, but most people finish work 2 hours earlier so maybe we could go earlier.

Anyway Swiss national day is Friday not Thursday!

I like the going earlier idea as long as it doesn't then turn into a four hour ride.

Re: Thursday Night Road Bike Ride (Zurich)

oh come on you'd love it. I could potentially make it for wednesday but working thursday. We could do some not so very secret training while hillseeker is away getting fat eating fondu with her parents.

Re: Thursday Night Road Bike Ride (Zurich)

super secret training, does that mean we should have two nights back to back??? hopefully that would not lead to a double super secret training ban (sorry for the obscure movie reference for some perhaps)

(I didn't know this existed but a couple of the guys I did the Etape with were put on training bans by there s.o.'s after the race - what is wrong with the world).

Re: Thursday Night Road Bike Ride (Zurich)

sounds like a plan. we could do something modest and i could call it 'active recovery' if you feeling the need to hold back.

Re: Thursday Night Road Bike Ride (Zurich)

So the official ride will go on on Thursday (weather permitting). Will make an executive decision on a time and starting point later.

An unofficial (breakaway) ride will be on Wednesday for anyone who can't make it Thursday or who needs additional training. PM me about the Wednesday ride.

Re: Thursday Night Road Bike Ride (Zurich)

As a forewarning, I have to say I can't live up to the high expectations of planning, foresight and hospitality that the Hillseeker has now set. So, I need input from some of the participants.

As for ride plans, there are two general possibilities with different meeting points

1) Meet at the Meilen Ferry Stop, cycle to Herrliberg, then do one of my favorite climbs (a long 5 km climb) up through Wetzwil and up to Guldenen, then drop down to Egg and climb the forested climb up to Pfannenstiel and from there find a few more hills to climb before departing back to Nooba. Start time would be 6:30 to allow people to get to Meilen

2) Meet at the Realp tram stop....from here continue up the hill to Zollikerberg and drop down towards Greifensee and find some hills---

the route would be something like this.....http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/i...kValue=5982183

I will state that I am not as intimately familiar with the number 2 climbs(routes) - so If Nick or Eire aren't participating it could end up in some randomess but we will have fun anyhow.

With route 2, I would aim to start at 6 due to holiday on Friday (but depending on if people can make it).

Please let me know your preferences. Also, open for other suggestions.

I'll let you know if I can make it or not tomorrow. I've already had to sacrifice my normal Wednesday evening ride this evening, so hopefully I'll get out on the skinny tyres tomorrow!

Re: Thursday Night Road Bike Ride (Zurich)

I vote for option #1... sounds like you know a fun route. in particular I'm looking forward to trying Nooba, I'll see if my girlfriend wants to join us there after as she might be jealous if I get asian food without her...

nooba is available under both options....but I do admit I know Option 1 much better....the major variable is whether people want to cycle all the way to Meilen first. I will make a final call tomorrow morning on the route.

They are roughly the same route, you just climb some of the descents and descend some of the climbs and link them up slightly differently.

Re: Thursday Night Road Bike Ride (Zurich)

okay if Dr. D is willing to help with the directions at the start (which is where I am a little confused), I vote for starting at Realp tram stop, can everyone make it by six (due to tomorrow being shorter day for most) or do we want to stick with 6:30?

Re: Thursday Night Road Bike Ride (Zurich)

Dakman,
Do you have your phone back?

I'm not sure if I can make it to the start time, but I may ride out from my place in Uster and meet ye somewhere on the route if I can get in touch with someone on the ride. I have your and Dr. D's phone no. so I'll send one of you a text if I can make it and arrange somewhere to meet.

I think you mean "Rehalp" station and not "Realp"?

Yes, I mean the last stop on tram 11 (is it)..when you go up the Forchstrasse....we will meet on the right side near where the tram parks.

OK - starting time 6:30 is fine
