*The times shown may change, depending on DST settings
City/Town: Lausanne
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: TBD (see first post below)

Our initial Lausanne evening bike ride was successful last week, with six people enjoying a very social ride! So, let's try another this week. We'll make it Wednesday (July 30th '08) instead of Thursday because many people are leaving for the long weekend on Thursday evening. The weather looks perfect for Wednesday: 29 degrees and mostly sunny (if it does rain then the ride will be canceled).

Time: 18:30 seemed to work best for everyone last week, so we'll do the same again. That doesn't give us a lot of time, so please try hard to be on time.

Route: Last week, we did some small roads in the farmlands of the Vaudoise plateau towards L'Isle. If people want to do the same again, then we can. Alternatively, we could head into the hills and valleys above Lausanne, but this would mean some harder and longer climbs. Another alternative is to head along the lake (towards Vevey is nicer than towards Nyon) and although this is the easiest ride in the region and it's very scenic, it is not ideal if we want to roll along being social as we did a lot last week (the road is busy, and so noisy and necessitates single-file riding). Therefore, please discuss your route preferences below (how hard, how socially conducive, how long, etc) and feel free to suggest something that I haven't thought of. The final decision will be announced in the first response below.

Meeting Point: Once the route is decided, I'll pick a meeting spot on the appropriate side of the city, and announce this in the first response below.

Riding Speed: Like last week, the pace will be modest, to cater for a wide range of abilities. Please don't be concerned if you are not the fittest, the fastest, or don't have the best bike, there will be others in a similar situation. A road/racing bike or a fast hybrid will be the best kind of bike to use, and we will stay on paved surfaces.

BASIC SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: Bicycle helmet, a properly maintained bicycle with insurance sticker (Swiss velo vignette), sufficient cash for transport should your bike break down, and formal identification. A small set of emergency lights, or something bigger, are also recommended in case we end up later than expected.

CAVEAT: This event is organised with all care, but the responsibilities lie with each individual participant. We have simply named a time and place, the rest is up to you.

OK, we'll keep things simple and meet at the same place as last time: Bourdonette metro stop, next to the area where the bus turnaround is, see this map. Time is still 18:30.
See you all there.

Nice one, Chris

I'd prefer less busy/more sociable, so I guess I would rather the hilly scenic bits than the flatter busier stuff. Oh, and I did 50km last time which was the right amount..

Edit: Novelty would be nice, but I would be quite happy to go over old tracks.

Thanks for the input, robban. One more question for people (to assist with route planning): How important is the novelty / repetitiveness of the route?

I had forgotten to mention distance. I believe last week's ride was 40km, but most people did about 5km each way to and from the start location, making it about a 50 km ride for most of us.

I'm quite happy to do our next ride in the same region as the last. It's not too flat, not too hilly, and the roads are about as quiet as you can get within that distance of Lausanne. I'm sure we can vary the route a bit to keep it interesting enough for a few weeks. Once people get bored, we can go for a ride on the corniche through the vineyards. Those >20% gradient hills will separate the sheep from the goats.

A high of 30 today? I think I'll just ride my bike straight into the lake after we're done.

Hi,

I would love to join but 18.30 is a little early for me.

I don't suppose you've planned your route already for this eve? Heading west at all? Perhaps I can find you in the hills?

Re: Lausanne evening bike ride, Weds' July 30 '08

Sorry, but we're probably not going to know the route until 18:29. It will most likely be west out through Aclens, and from there on some combination of backroads, eventually arriving back in Lausanne ~20:30.

A most entertaining evening, including avoiding the lightning by hiding in an underpass. Bring it on

Hi, I'm sorry for not showing up this wednesday, I hope I didn't kept u waiting...?! I could't find the place 'til 20 min too late. With the weather in mind I'm a bit glad I didn't although I'm less happy for the accident I had on my way home...Beware of cars that cross the bikingpath in front of you!!! Fortunately, I got only small scratches and some bruisings and my bike didn't get any major damages...I'm really happy that I didn't got more injured....! Hope you had a nice trip and hopefully I'll be able to ride with you some other time!

Jespan, I'm sorry to hear about your accident, I'm glad you weren't badly hurt. MrChris, hopefully these events will continue, and we will certainly be doing the The Great Annual Ice Cream Cycle Tour of Lake Geneva on September 6th, so hopefully you can join us for that.
