City/Town: Basel
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Basel SBB

Hi all,

Thanks Jenny for organising the last cycle evening - As I will still be away the next few weeks I though I would post the next event a bit early.

Wednesday 10th September meeting in front of the SBB from 18:45 (next to the Info signs / Maps) to then leave at 19:00

(Note this in 3 weeks from the last one, and not the normal 2 weeks, as that would be be the same week as the "Basel Curry" than many of us attend.)

This time planning to head from the station out towards St Jakobs, then along the route toward Prattlen then coming back via Birsfelden before heading back to Basel for a well deserved beer. (Unless in the next weeks you have better ideas )

The route would be mostly on cycle paths and not remotely hilly with a length of about 20/25kms again. This one will be really easy without any of "Pats small hills" to climb .

Not a timed road race or off-road course, and aimed at all cycling abilities, young and old, who wish to explore the region / do something different aside Curry or Beer (although a beer after doesn't go completely amiss).

As you can see the from the previous events people with a range of different cycling abilities join us, to make for a pleasant evening.

Any questions just post below and Jenny, Mel or someone else will help until my return just before the event.

Pat

P.S
Don't forget your lights. It would be a good idea as it's starting to get dark quite early.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle 10th Sept

To anyone like me who has not previously attended due to a lack of bike...There is a bike sale on Guterstasse behind Basel SBB tomorrow Fri 5th (9-20h) and Saturday (12-18h) where this seasons top bike brands are selling off at massively cut-down prices (apparently).

I don't know if second hand bikes will be sold as my German is not good enough to fully understand the website, but I'll certainly go along and have a look tomorrow!

Here's the link if anyone's interested:

Re: Basel Evening Cycle 10th Sept

Hi all,

Weather looking good for tomorrow.

It looks like we will be heading to Paddys after for food and drinks . Not sure what time we will get there, but I'm sure we will find each other. (Note - if the weather turns nasty - I think we should still head out for food / drinks anyway )

Looking forward to it,

Pat

PS - Mel - do you need help fixing your inter tube before hand? PM me.

Thanks Pat I've actually got myself another 2nd hand bike as it was too much of a good bargain to resist! It's mean with front and back suspension and much lighter than my city bike!!! I may look the part even if I can't balance too well

ScientistMel, thanks for the tip about the bike sale, my friend picked up a really nice bike there for half the retail price.

Oh, dear. And that BEFORE we get to Paddy's?!?

Am joining in, sorry about the short notice.

@kirstyjane, Abanana1: yes, it's normal that some people only join in on the eating and drinking bit. Funny, that.

Get someone you know in the cycling group to SMS you when we get there.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle 10th Sept

Thanks Pat for another great cycle night. I really liked the village we cycled through and couldn't believe it when you told me it was Pratteln!!! There was me thinking it only had Ikea to offer

Looking forward to the next one which will possibly be the last evening cycle of the year

I hope you do decide to organise some Sunday bike rides as mentioned

By the way, the guy who had his chain snap and consequently nearly had an accident, are you ok? (sorry I didn't catch your name yesterday)

I'm also concerned. JamesWtc - Everything OK? We had quite a scare there.

I'd also like to express my respect for Pat's level of preparedness . Puncture kit, spanners, spare lights - wow!

Photos will be posted tomorrow; they're not great. As it got darker, the pix got wobblier and wobblier. But I'll see what I can salvage.

Re: Basel Evening Cycle 10th Sept

Another good night. Enjoyed the curry afterwards.... (EF - Curry in Basel - There must be something in the water ) Nice meeting new faces and see those that had been before - I think we were 14 or so.

It was good route, but I apologise for the "On Road" bit as be heading back towards Basel - It was a bit more of a main road than I would have liked to lead the 14 of us along.

The stats for those that care :
25km exacly (SBB - Prattlen - Augst - Birsfelden - Paddys) in a moving time of 1h41min (we only stopped for 20 mins????) with a moving average speed of 14.8kmph. Below is (the link to) the google map of the general route we did.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...9ced3a5f17b058

Also I may setup a "event" to do the Basel SlowUp http://www.basel-dreiland.ch/ on the 21st of Sept - would anyone else be interested? That aside, I will post the next (last?) evening cycle for 2 weeks time in the next days

Pat

Hi Pat, I'd probably be up for doing Slowup. Probably me plus one but will need to confirm that.

Hi resident...

Thanks for your concern. I'm alright... I think just a little twist on my ankle, which I only feel it this morning when I wake up. Other than that, only little bruises on my legs. O'm still survive.
