1st Ausländer Party 2007

Hi all English Speaking , living in Switzerland and staying in Zürich , B/L/Z/almost there C Bewilligungen or those remotely interested in meeting people in the same situation.

Anyone interested in helping me organise an quaterly event or party please let me know.

The following ideas have passed my mind:

Quarterly event with one host country
- music and entertainment from that country
- food and drink offered from that country
- combined with travel / holliday - maby a local travel agency
- Guest speaker- current events ect.
- Sponsoring

One can build endlessly on the idea.

All those interested in starting a workgroup on the idea let me know. All of you with ideas let me know and I will make sure I add them to the discussion.

Birkenhead
Well, the biggest question I have is the place. Are we aiming for a private apartment, a community center or a restaurant?

Try Bauschanzli - it's where Connelli have the circus every Christmas. Near Berkli pltz. I've arranged leaving do's there before. Although it may have changed hands since then....

Hi, Birkenhead

Great idea. You should get in touch with katie who organized the Christmas party, apparently a fun evening and big success. There are also parties organized by the various countries' clubs (4th of July, Australia Day, etc.). Maybe, they can also give you a hint on how many people to expect, as this will probably also play a role in the planning process.

Good luck with your events

Re: 1st Ausländer Party 2007

mentioning katie, I believe the cost of the Christmas party may not have been met - so any future "event" should consider that fact and also consider ensuring that katie perhaps has the "gap" filled as she did make a lot of effort in setting up the event.

Re: 1st Ausländer Party 2007

Thank you all for your responses.

I have a location already - capacity 1600 (people) - for free - the only problem is it has to be either a Wednesday / Thursday or Sunday. It is a Club location with all the equipment, barts ect that would be needed.

Re: 1st Ausländer Party 2007

Birkenhead,

Your wishes to organise a party are commendable, so let's stay on topic and discuss it.

I would suggest you try to organise a few informal events before making grand plans. I organised many events last year and can offer the following observations:

- Summer is the most popular time for events
- The most people attending any event I organised was about 40, which was usually Friday drinks at a lounge where people could also eat
- The Acapulco bar events (usually Wednesday) also had around 40 at their high point, however it can't be accredited to englishforum, as the invitations were also emailed out on another list for local and foreign people in Zürich
- The englishforum xmas party had about 30 people present
- (whisper: you also have to generate momentum to keep people coming back next time and bringing friends)

Despite all of this, the EF member base is growing all the time, so these numbers can only increase.

I will be organising more events soon, however I'll be home and away for the next few weeks, so don't expect anything soon. It might be interesting for you to get your hands dirty with it. Heck, *someone* has to take control of the threatened curry night thread...

Good luck. Feel free to ask me any questions you might have.

Re: 1st Ausländer Party 2007

Good idea to share your experiences organizing events, Diem - could be helpful to others, too. So, here is my experience:

During the past year, I organized about 30 events, about half of which were open to everyone, while the other half was for singles over 30, the group I had originally started with. From June on, the events were also posted on this forum. The events included going for drinks, for dinner, to the movies, to concerts, to a guided tour of Zurich, to the Lucerne Fasnacht, hiking and other things.

- Highest attendance was about 50 for drinks on a Wednesday evening last January
- I had asked people whether they would also be interested in other events, and while most were keen on going to the movies, hiking, cultural events in Switzerland and similar events, actually coming to such things proved to be more difficult.
- For events other than drinks, there were generally about 5-15 people present, most of whom were from my mailing list of people interested in such events.
- Most people want to keep their options until the last minute and decide spontaneously whether and when they come. So, one should keep it simple and not do anything that requires reservations, a set starting time or a certain number of attendees.
- Do what you like and how you like to do it.

I hope this helps.
Idgie
