| | | Want a game of 10 pin Bowling on 8th April
I am looking to meet new friends and find some other english speaking ex-pats here in Switzerland so I propose maybe meeting up for a game of 10 pin bowling on Saturday 1st April (It is now the 8th of April as I have plans for the 1st). Would anyone be interested in coming along???
Cheers
Chris

Create a link from the calendar back to your event thread for better visibility.

Well I'm not sure which question you are asking? Creating a calendar event is easy, go to the calendar and find the option to create a new event. To place a link to your message just copy the address from the location bar of your browser and paste it into the calendar entry, just as if you were telling a friend to look at a particular message via email.
Try it and you'll figure it out soon enough. You'll see me linking to other threads frequently in messages.

I think I have done it but by mistake I didn't change the date so the one selected was for today instead of the 8th April. How do I delete the post made for today or shall I just leave it??
Sorry

Calendar -> select your event -> Delete event
Calendar -> select your event -> Edit your event
I've fixed it for you. I corrected the date, and adjusted the title more appropriately. The old title was "Anyone for 10 pin bowling" - which doesn't really match when viewed in a calendar and if it were a question it should at least have a question mark. I edited your text to give a little bit of information about why the user should click your link, and mentioned that the event was in Zurich - after all, we do have users who don't live in Zurich, and who probably get ticked off if we just assume that everybody else does.
Thinking about things like subject lines, punctuation (look at the title of this message for example) and relevant details makes the experience easier for all of us, and might increase your chances of people reading and responding.

And that's over moderation - I reckon you guys get away with a heck of a lot |

I think I am going to have to proof read everything I post on here for fear of incorrect grammar ha ha ha
By the way you have spelt apartments wrong on the trading posts thread. Just thought you might like to know .

Well you are the "editor" so what do you expect?
Thanks for pointing that out - a bit unusual for me - I don't bother to proof read message content on the forum, but I'm more careful with headings and such things.
I'm surprised not only by the fact that I didn't spot that one, but also that this forum has existed for almost a year and nobody else spotted it! Actually - you only get half points - there were two errors on that line, now both are fixed |

Go on tell us what was the second mistake? (Even this line I had to read three times to make sure all punctuation and grammar is correct. What have you done to me ha ha ha).
Also on the complaints thread you say "if you are easily offended, please look elsewhere." Is there meant to be a comma after offended? I would have written it without but you have me thinking now ha ha ha.
Cheers

The second mistake was my spelling of commerical instead of commercial - this is a common mistake of mine and more to do with the way my fingers have automatically learned to type certain words rather than not being able to spell them.
As for the comma, I do have a habit of overusing them (something from which I am trying to wean myself off), but I think in that case it does tend to emphasise the pause.
Like I said - my own messages are full of mistakes - but only because I am too lazy to proof read, but I at least try to check "published" works or important stuff like web sites.
I saw a CD being sold in South Africa last year called "Christmas Carol's". It's printed year after year, and advertised all over the place and the text is in really big writing. It's produced by Telkom - the monopoly telecommunications carrier. It seems that the entire country hasn't noticed that the CD isn't produced by a lady called "Christmas Carol" and is in fact a rather large in-your-face punctuation error.
I've often considered buying some books on better writing, but when I see that nobody gives a toss and our schools are churning out large numbers of people who are functionally illiterate I think to myself "why bother?"
Anyway, this is way off topic - if we want to discuss pedantry we should start a new thread, because this was supposed to be about your ten pin bowling event.
By the way - try and gather a bit of info like how much will it cost, what time will it start, what's so great about it etc. This might help stir people up off their lazy asses... One thing you are going to learn about expats - it's really hard to get them to do something or go to something!

Do you fancy a game Mark? It doesn't have to be in Zurich but maybe we could find a centre meeting point between the two of us. My girlfriend speaks excellent english so she will be coming along for a chat and a game too.
Let me know if you are interested.
Cheers

if we're talking about apostrophes (apostrophe's/apostrophes'? ) then the mag, editor, is full of misplaced ones... | Quote: | | | | I think the Irish have some of the best pub’s | | | | | | Quote: | | | | Jokes & JPEG’s | | | | | | Quote: | | | | | Lets Pretend | | | | | |

Hey what's this, Pick on me day
I edit my magazine but a lot of it is written by my readers and other website owners. I spend so much time designing the mag that I admit I over look apostrophes etc.
Remember this - the person who doesn't make mistakes doesn't make anything.
Anyway fancy a game of bowling |

Well I did spot those in the mag too - but I was being NICE (not that you'd know anything about that Lob Rockster!)
Seriously though - I can't fault JPEG's though because it is an acronym. Personally I prefer to write acronyms without an apostrophe, but the generally acceptable standard seems to be to use them. The writing of PCs or CDs or UPSs can seem strange without it sometimes. Possibly it is the use of apostrophe in acronyms that has caused so many people to incorrectly add them to shortened words or even non shortened words.
My South African cousin explained to me that words ending in vowel sounds are supposed to have apostrophes - e.g. camera's - to which I replied "BOLLOCKS".
But probably the most amusing thing is when you see the same errors creeping into German - possibly because they've seen so many native speakers making the mistake that they think it's the correct thing to do. But when they misspell their own words it's even funnier. There's a big sign up on a street near where I live "Zu vermeiten: Büro's". Funny - I don't remember that rule from my German classes ;-)
Sigh... Off topic again. Maybe we should create an area called offtopic and throw all this stuff in there.

And what's General Chat if it's not "Off-topic".
