City/Town: Luzern
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Under the arch at Luzern station

Eh up you gorgeous people!

Tuesday evening sees the big finale of the Luzern Fastnacht, with all the trolls, goblins and brass musicians (in increasing degree of scariness) making their way through the city in a grand parade, surrounded by heavy drinking, random copulation, street fighting and all the other stuff that makes living in Switzerland so pleasant.

So..... if anyone wants to come along in a (dis)organised EF mob, I can arrange to be under the Big Arch at the station at about 19:00, ready for the start of the parade at half past.

RSVPs aren't binding, but are simply to give me an indication as to whether it's worth interrupting my drinking to go back to the station at seven o' clock or not...

I shall bring a small knitted monkey by way of identification...
RSVP'd Yes: 2 (2 members and No guests)
  • Dougal's Breakfast - One has to let one's hair down before the strict abstinence of Lent, isn't it?
  • MathNut - Would you believe I've been here since - well, never mind that - and I haven't been to Luzern yet? High time to do something about that.
RSVP'd Maybe: 1 (1 members and No guests)
  • cyrus - I'll be there, but where?
RSVP'd No: 5
  • Sutter - Damn to far away have fun:-)
  • swisspea - Went past today and it was looking pretty fun...but can't make it for Tuesday - Gotta work on my costume... will be planning for the weekend in Zurich, so if you have a suggestion for then, that would be great.. ;-)
  • Texaner - Can't get an affordable ticket on such short notice, but I'll drink a beer in solidarity — about 7 hours later.
  • raincookie - You know I hate Fasnacht, but the knitted monkey sounds cute.......!!
  • argus - For a 'costume', a cheeky friend suggested I put on dark sunglasses and carry a candy cane and let the Seeing-Eye pup (with only 'L' licence) guide me but I don't think it'd go down very well.
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Re: Luzern Fastnacht Parade

I really recommend the Luzern parade. I couldn't believe the effort put into some of the costumes. I am thinking of going earlier with my son.

Don't forget to wear a mask or you will look like a git

Re: Luzern Fastnacht Parade

I'll be in and around the crowd, but I don't think I can make the meet.

As another tip, watching the parade is fun, but make sure to head to Unter der Egg, all the bands play on the steps there, one after the other in a giant orgy of guggen music, and everyone is dancing along. I will warn you, it is jam packed round there

EDIT:

Getting a costume is a good idea too, even if it's just a funny wig and glasses

I can promise that there will be random copulation.

What I cannot promise, alas, is that you will be involved in it.

Unless you happen to be female, aged 25 - 40, and more attractive than any other offers I might get tomorrow evening...

Re: Luzern Fastnacht Parade

Another tip, don`t throw confettie at the witches, or the guys with the long wigs on, i did this last year, and got kidnapped and thrown in the confetti bin it took me ages to get all the confetti out of my clothes, including my bra, and i was still finding the stuff weeks later. This year when i saw them coming i hid so they wouldn`t see me

Does that not have to do with the "Blaggedde" (badge from the local carneval committee)? I remember that you absolutely have to have one (visible) on your coat, otherwise you're free game for all the participating carnevalists...

That's one of my biggest worries -- confetti in the bra.

One question: how do celebrants keep warm in their costumes?

Ok here is my secret, me and my husband have a comfetti fight between ourselves first before it starts so we are covered in confetti

I'm not liking the confetti on the sidewalks 'coz the pup eats it and it comes out in her poo. Colourful dog poo, anyone? Can I throw it at those carnivalists?

They normally do make a good job of clearing it up, but it must be a massive operation!

I was down there last night, all the confetti mixed with the slush has made an intersting mix that colours your shoes.

As a tip, wear some sturdy shoes, it's damn slippy out there, and your toesies will be trodden on more than once.
