City/Town: Lausanne
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Place de la Riponne

I just found out today that there will be a Red Bull Crashed Ice race in Lausanne on March 14th! I am soooo going to watch!

In case you are wondering what this is, Crashed Ice races are a bit of a cross between boarder-cross and ice skating. Racers compete on a downhill ice-skating course that has lots of twists and turns, and bumps, and jumps. Four race at the same time, with the top two finishers advancing to the next round. It's a bit wild.

I think this video gives a good introduction to the sport:

So who's coming to watch this with me? I figure we can show up a bit early to seize a good spot, and can bring a thermos of vin chaud to keep us warm while we wait (I think I'll pass on the Red Bull ).

Essential details are that it's Saturday March 14th starting at 19:00 hours. Admission is free.

I'll announce a meeting point and time once I've had the chance to scope out the venue a bit more. Please RSVP so I know who to contact with final details once I've figured them out!

For more info on the event, see the Wikipedia page: Wikipedia reference-linkCrashed_ice. I love this photo from Quebec City in 2007:

Hmmmmm.... I'm a bit concerned that this event might require sub-zero temperatures for them to make the ice. I can't imagine they'd construct an artificial ice installation just for this.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a temperature drop sometime soon!

If you can get Eurosport on Satellite, the Quebec races are on later this evening.

Holy. Sh!t!

<Prepares to eat her own words.>

I just came home through Riponne, and there now are 5 or 6 of these massive cooling units between there and the Chateau (see attached photo). I took a look at them up close and they are definitely coolant pumping machines for making artificial ice. The street where the race will be run is already blocked off (except for local traffic) and there are teams of men installing all sorts of protective/scaffolding type equipment.

This is going to be awesome.

Yes. Leave the station by the main entrance and hop onto the metro which is just outside. Riponne is but two stops away. Otherwise it's about a 10 minute walk.

Great, I know the children are keen to see this so will probably go along .
As a matter of interest , is it worth to drive down and park up ? ie what's the parking situation like in that area.

Re: Red Bull Crashed Ice Races 2009 (Lausanne)

Erm, I could tell you that there is a 'Parking Riponne' right next to the square, but the chances of you getting anywhere near it that day are zilch. There are other car parks in Lausanne but if the event attracts a crowd, it's probably best to take the train anyway. In my opinion

I live about 20 mins walk from Riponne and will be using my feet to get there. Hope to see you too!

It is ridiculously easy to get to Riponne from the main train station, so I'd definitely recommend taking the train.

If anyone does end up driving, it would be easiest to park at the top of town and take the metro down.

As you can see on the map, Riponne is in the city centre, but if you exit the A9 at Lausanne-Vennes, Hôpitaux (exit 10), you can park next to the metro station (Vennes, that is) and take the metro into town. The car park at the station isn't finished yet, but there is a large outdoor parking lot that you can use.

Heather

PS-Looking forward to meeting you, Nick! (Fellow NatGeo fan, and all.... )

Re: Red Bull Crashed Ice Races 2009 (Lausanne)

Where do folks want to meet up? At the bottom (Riponne) or the top (Château)? In between? I'll have two small children with me, so the Giraffe or Great Escape are probably not perfect. The Café au Château is on the route, and is normally my favourite pub, but again with the kids...

Anyone planning on watching on Friday? I've got a hockey game Saturday, so I'm planning on checking out the qualification on Friday night. As if it really matters who the winner is, when it's mayhem that we're after.
