City/Town: Zurich/Westside
Event Type: Drinks/Bar
Meeting Point: Westside Music Cafe, Limmatstrasse 109

Dear Folks,

Hope all is well with you.

So many people in the group and it can be tough especially if you are a new member. Reason being, some are shy to go out on their own and meet a bunch of people who already know each other.

To overcome this, I have come up with a new monthly event called, the NEW MEMBERS MEET (NMM).

NMM will be held on last Wednesday of every month.

These meets will take place on the last Wednesday of every month. Of course the Wednesday night fever will be ON every week.

This month's meet takes place on the 29th April 2009.

This event starts at 7pm and goes on until you drop dead and ready to go home.

THERE ARE SOME BASIC RULES )

Just to make the Newbies feel at home and comfortable, drinks start at 7pm and since this is a NEW MEMBERS MEET ONLY NEW COMERS WILL ATTEND FOR THE FIRST 2 HOURS.

The whole idea of having these rules is to make the Newbies feel more comfortable.

New comers are those who have never attended any event.

From 9pm onwards its open for everybody..Newbies and Oldies to share their experience.

Hope to see a lot of new faces.

Please reply to this with subject NEW or OLD.

When: April 29th 2009
What time: 7pm onwards
Where: Westside Music Cafe
Limmatstrasse 109
Opp Palais XTRA (Tram no 4, 13; Tramstop, Limmatplatz)
Zurich

See you all there!!!
Any questions??
Write me!!

Cheers
Ehsaa

Re: APRIL - New Members Meet - Midweek Dinks

Why is it necessary that "ONLY NEW COMERS WILL ATTEND FOR THE FIRST 2 HOURS"?

Newcomers maybe shy, but if they're THAT shy, I would assume they'd be reluctant to meet anyone at all. The primary concern would be meeting strangers, not whether the stranger was someone who'd kicked around zurich for 10 days or 10 years.

Anyway. Just my two cents

That is the way how it is...I just put myself in the shoes of a newcomer and go to an event where everyone knows each other...NOT the best experience...

The idea is to get ALL the people together who are in the same boat...

What makes you think so?

IT IS ALL ABOUT MEETING EXPATS...NO? How does it matter GLOCALS or EF?

Re: APRIL - New Members Meet - Midweek Dinks

Chill Ehsaan.

I have seen you referred to as;

"the GLOCALS man in Zürich"

So I think my original question is fair enough.

GLOCALS and EF are seperate and distinct. I think someone coming in and setting "rules" on meetings, however good the intentions behind these rules might be, is less appropriate and welcome on the EF than GLOCALS.
To my mind EF is a little bit more informal in that sense, whereas GLOCALS is a little more "disco lights, elephants and dancing girls". I can appreciate both (especially the dancing girls) but to put your question "what difference does it make Glocals or EF?" back to you in a slightly different form,

If GLOCALS is a good platform for organising larger, more structured events" why is it necessary to bring that to the EF too?

Zürich drinks are organised here on the EF often enough and I don't buy it that a new face is more likely to turn up if established members are banned for 2 hours.
Another difference is the EF forum itself is a lot more important, so should I choose to go to an event I can actually get a handle on what the people may be like from threads on the forum.

I have nothing against you organising events. In fact I think it is good for the ex-pat scene that someone does, but I think you can see by the comments and the (lack of) interest so far that you are playing to the wrong crowd with this type of event on EF.

I look forward to attending the GLOCALS events in the future, and also some of the more laid back "pint and a packet of cheese and onion" drink ups that seem more usual on EF.

Shove,

I am Chilled!! Its you who got a bit hyper with quotes like "glocals hijacking EF".

agreed, GLOCALS and EF are distinct enough...but who makes it distinct? It just the way how you think...And the so called "rules" are just to make the NEWBIEs feel more comfortable and relaxed..Just to encourage them to join the events rather than hesitating...I don't think there is anything less appropriate about it...In the end everyone is welcome..

What I also try to do is get the expats together..for me an expat is an expat...does not matter EF or GLOCALS or INTERNATIONS or MEETUP..
We all have one thing in common, we are out here to meet new people...

Have a look at the link below...Its the same posting on meetup...
http://newintown.meetup.com/757/calendar/10249689/

What would you say about that? Meetup trying to hijack EF? No my friends! No! Its just a cross platform event where I am trying to get some people together. For me these are all platforms to expand your social network.

Now where do you get this idea from? Are you telling me people on EF don't like disco lights or dancing girls? I don't think so...just because there are no such events organized does not meake a forum any different...

Nobody is forced to join an event. It a question of a personal choice, to join or not to join? So if you think this is not the right event for you, simply ignore it. There maybe people who would like to join...

What makes you think its the "wrong crowd", unless you know every person of EF personally?

I have many other titles apart from this..Lady Killer, Dancing beast and many others (I have to look up my database) LOL

And of course!! I would love to see you at a gathering...Glocals or EF or MEETUP or simply PM each other and go for a drink!

I DO NOT MEAN TO OFFEND ANYBODY or TO HIJACK ANY FORUM (you simply make me feel very powerful )

Cheers

<snip>
A year on the forum, meeting some of it's members and the fact that after a day the interest stretches to a "Maybe, maybe", a "Too many Rules, so thanks but no thanks", and a "Sorry, luv, I'm washing my hair that night".

Hijacked is a word mate. Chilled is an attitude.
I think, and it is just an opinion, that you need to accept the fact not every forum populated by expats is the same and that every meet-up is suitable to every membergroup. Sure there can be some crossover. As I said. I enjoy some events more in the GLOCALS ilk, and some of the EF type, but I recognise the differences between the two forums. With all respect Ehsaan if you don't see that, you are selling to a market you don't understand.

Good luck anyway. I won't be attending this meeting, if it happens, but maybe we catch up at a GLOCALS event some time.

Peace.

Re: APRIL - New Members Meet - Midweek Dinks

Who are you? What is Glocals? Why would I care about your rules?

New comers are those who have never attended any event.

How would you know how many events I attended? I have not seen you around at the drinks I went to and your 33 posts in 2 years suggest you are not really a regular here, are you?

Why do you set up rules? Our mods try to limit them to the absolute necessary here... and we love them for that.

Honestly, rules are not cool here and if I had more than 4mm hair, I guess I would do the same as Uncle Max instead of attending. But if you decide to change your plan and make an event that actually fits the tone of this forum (read and learn)... many might want to change their mind.

Re: APRIL - New Members Meet - Midweek Dinks

This sounds like a well intentioned but misguided idea. Good luck and hope it is successful.

For me, the idea of meeting just 'newcomers', would not be appealing. I would like to be welcomed by people with some experience of what is going on.

I do understand that in any club it is natural for some established members to form cliques that can be offputting for new members. Perhaps the intention was to avoid this.

My suggestion would be to encourage a group of established members to attend to welcome new members and introduce them to other people.

Re: APRIL - New Members Meet - Midweek Dinks

Ehsaan's earlier thread about the spring party was very much commercial and hence in breach with the forum rules - these have been enforced in the past and will be in the future.

Although it strikes me as exotic, reserving two hours for new members (of what?) is perfectly within the EF rules. However I assume that this event has the same kind of affiliation with Glocals and it therefor will be closed.

I encourage event organisers to openly declare if a meeting is advertised elsewhere or commercially supported (free entrance doesn't equal non-commercial). Copypasta from other places is not satisfactory.
