Re: Photography club meets

Interesting, but it really doesn't fit here does it?

An idea could be to have the discussions within the particular (Zürich/Basel) Flickr group, but at the moment that doesn't seem to happening anyway - and yes I'm just as guilty as most others in that I haven't started a discussion there yet.

The problem is that it's the events area where the meetings are announced, and therefore the comments will tend to placed in the event thread.

Other than having a completely separate section of the EF just for the photo club (which I doubt very much will happen as it's kind of moving away from what the EF is about) then I really don't see any other solution than using Flickr as the basis for our discussions.

Re: Photography club meets

This was my point ... id prefer to have a seperate section to discuss and comment in . I personally would have prefered to keep this with in Ef , as it is an EF social event , and not an outside event.
Discussions are better outside of the calendar thread , to stop events being pushed out of sight by lots of comments on the event page.

Ok well its best here for the time being as it is a social event and not a sports/fitness subject

I am not fully understanding your concern about your post being bumped to the top, if someone posts a new event it will show up in new posts

Re: Photography club meets

my concern is not with my own event , its with the fact that anything we post , bumps everyone elses post down the list . .. whenever we have an event ppl make comments on it with around 20 active members theres a lot of comments .. it seems unfair to me , that other ppls events get pushed out of sight when this happens

You shouldn't arrange such damned good events then Karl, I have zero sympathy start beating people with a stick then they'll stop coming and your problem is solved

anyway sod the others if your event is popular then it's not your issue to worry about others events IMO

I think a sticky in social events is the way to go for this (as suggested by Scott)

Re: Photography club meets

Hi,

I would prefer to use the Flickr group for discussions directly to do with photography rather than event specific discussions. The problem is that if you don't have a section where you can create individual discussion topics you end up with a single thread per meeting and as soon as one meeting has taken place you have effectively "lost" the previous discussion. A single thread ends up being effectively a mailing list and loses all the advantages of a bulletin board.

Of course other other way would be to great sections under social events for the photography club, currys and running groups for example. That way the groups that regularly meet would have their own sections. For me the criteria for a separate section should be more than 3 regular meetings and more than 20 people involved.

Have fun

Martin

Re: Photography club meets

Perhaps the "Travel/Day Trips/Free Time would be a more appropriate place on the EF to hold the discussions after the event.

Perhaps, as Nicky suggested, locking the original "Event" thread, with the last post being a redirect to the "discussion" thread would be an idea.

However with what I've suggested it starts to get too damn messy IMO. We'll be signing up in one thread, posting the pictures in Flickr, and then discussing the pictures in yet another thread here on EF, and along the way having to get a moderator to lock the event thread.

I agree that having a separate section for the photo club would be ideal. Perhaps you could sell to the forum bosses as a separate section entitled "Photography in Switzerland", thus providing a base for us, and also to allow other people to post their photos. There is a thread in "Daily Life" which is dedicated to photos, and I've always thought it would be better for it to have it's own section.

Re: Photography club meets

Hi Martin ,
the intent is to continue using the flickr group for photo specific discussions. The problem is that not everyone, myself included is logged into flickr. , and most ppl from the group recieve notifications on here. As one meeting is gone , ppl still comment there and thats my point becuase it lowers the ranking of other events if you like .
But along with Nicky Scott and Nathu were working on a viable alternative .

Re: Photography club meets

Andy ,
the suggestion is we have a stciky thread, and personally its a viable alternative suggestion. The flickr group will remain, and i dont agree with posting pictures on here, its far too cumbersome and not designed for this as flickr is .

We will post our pics on flickr, keep the pic comments on there and just use the EF calendar for our events with a sticky where we can all comment without having a negative effect on other posters.

Re: Photography club meets

Personally I kind of see stickies as an permanent informational resource, and not a long running thread.

Also, I can imagine 5 or 6 meetings down the line getting very frustrated when I can't remember the page of say the 3rd meeting when I want to refer to something there.

Don't get me wrong, it could work, it's just that I'm not 100% convinced at the moment.

Re: Photography club meets

are your thoughts to stop chatter completely on your calendar event thread? and all chatter to move over to a main thread?

Even if you had the new forum that was suggested the same issue would arise that slaphead has just mentioned? you either have one generic chit chat thread or a new thread created each time for chit chat for each meet up or stick to the chat per calendar event, i can't see another solution?

The sticky idea is mainly to keep that chat thread at the top of the social events section making it easier for you guys to locate and therefore not affecting other events posted which seems to be Karls main concern

regardless of if this thread remains in social events or has a new forum created especially for it, the same constraints will remain on locating information specific to one of the events

I suggest that the first post of the sticky should give some permanently useful, basic information about the group and its activities. So pick your rubber Karlnmik an edit it when you find the time.
