Sorry chaps, somethings come up that means I can't make the 19th now. Is the following weekend (26th) better for people to attend?
That would fit my agenda better indeed.

Re: Basel Photoclub

Hi All

Great to see activity here again - I am sure there would be plenty people interested if someone would organize an event.

On Saturday Jan 26th it is Vogel Gryff in Basel.
Vogel Gryff is another of the ´weird´Basel traditions that can easily be missed if you are not aware it is happening. It´s interesting to see and certainly gives some photo ops.
This could potentially be the ´theme´of a photo tour on Jan 26th.

http://www.myswitzerland.com/en/voge...-basel-bs.html explains a bit about this, but there is more information to be found online by googling Vogel Gryff. Most information is in German, though.

No matter what the destination is though, it would be fantastic if it could be set up under Social Events on the Forum - this way more people will see the event and participate.

I´d love to see this group re-started and will be happy to join if an event is organized

Thanks for this Miss Friis, this looks like a perfect excuse to go out photographing.

The route seems to run from Rheingasse through to Messeplatz, although a google image search shows them parading up and down Mittierebrücke which may make for a good location.

I'll try and post a new thread but as a newbie I'm not sure if this is possible - is there a friendly mod that can arrange this?

Unless anyone has any objections, I'll suggest we meet around 9:30am for a coffee somewhere, and then around 10 move to a location to stake out our positions. From the fireworks the other week, getting there an hour in advance will still get you a reasonable location but it gets crowded very quickly.

A few from Grindelwald on Saturday. Had a rental car for the day to pick up some furniture so after that was done, I went on a day trip.

I was wondering how often you guys meet up? I'm in Zurich, but I'd definitely make the trip out to Basel for a meeting one day.

Ideally I'd like to organise something at least every other month. There is quite a bit on though until March so we'll probably meet monthly in the short term.

This Saturday is Vogel Gryff, a traditional Basel event as best I can work out (see previous posts in the thread). I'm 50/50 about attending at the moment as I picked up a virus on Tuesday and am feeling a bit rubbish. Will see how I feel on the day.

Tentative plans are:
February 18-21 - Basler Fasnacht (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival_of_Basel & http://www.basel.ch/en/kultur/jahres...fasnacht-2.htm)
March 24 - Basel Fotobörsen in Binningen. Not entirely sure what this is but seems to be a market for 2nd hand gear and displays from local photo clubs.

Re: Basel Photoclub

NEXT MEET
Vogel Gryf - Clarastrasse, Basel - Sat. 26th January

Propose to meet in the Starbucks on Clarastrasse next to the Claraplatz tram stop (http://goo.gl/maps/vgId4) at 10:00am for a brew and to introduce ourselves.

Around 10:30 we'll wander up to Mittierebrücke to see if we can get a spot to photograph the boat as it arrives around 11am.

BVB website says (via Google translate):
Quote:
Vogel Gryff on 26 January 2013

22.01.2013

The three medals dancing about 12.00 clock on the Middle Rhine bridge at Käppelijoch. From 12.00 bis 12.15 clock is on Stracke Rheingasse - Claraplatz - Clarastrasse to Messeplatz held the pageant.

The Middle Rhine bridge at 11.20 to 12.20 clock and the route Greifengasse - 12.20 clock locked to all traffic - Claraplatz to exhibition space of 12.00.

diversions:

The tram lines 6, 8 and 14 operate during this time of the Wettstein bridge. Line 15 runs from Bruderholz to Bankverein to the pier.
Bus number 31/38 runs from Allschwil from the stop of the Children's Hospital UKBB Johanniterbrücke - Feldbergstrasse after Claraplatz and back. The number 34 runs from Bottmingen to university - Johanniterbrücke - Feldbergstrasse after Claraplatz
Weather is forecast as sunny but cold (max 2ºC)

I'll confirm tomorrow if I will be there - stupid virus has knocked me for 6. If I can't be there, anyone willing to be point of contact on the day?

BTW, my name is Dennis and if I'm there, I'll be dressed in red (coat, beanie and camera bag) so you can't miss me

Re: Basel Photoclub

Did anyone make it to Vogel Gryf on Saturday? Sadly I was perched on or over a toilet for most of Friday night and wasn't in any condition to go out on Saturday. Probably for the best, but the weather would have been great for photos.

Will get organised in the next few days about a Fasnacht meet. Any comments and preferences are helpful.

Re: Basel Photoclub

Ok, I've received some information regarding Fasnacht from a Swiss colleague which may be useful. Can you indicate what you'd be interested in arranging a meet for? Anyone who's done this before - what are your thoughts? All events seem to be at night so bring a flash or high aperture lens if you have one.

Sunday,17-Feb-2013, 19:15: ‘Chienbäse-Umzug’ in Liestal

http://www.chienbaese-verein.ch/

Some advancedinfo:
- Wearold clothes
- Don’tstay in the first row … you won’t like it.
- Takethe train to Liestal, rather than the car.
Quote:
Monday,18-Feb-2013, 04:00 (!): Morgestraich in Basel City (everywhere)

In therestaurants (Beizli), you should also try onion-tart (Ziebelewaie), cheese-tart(Cheeswaie), and meal-soup (Mehlsuppe).

By the way,for all events: don’t forget to buy a Fasnachts badge (Plagette, see also http://www.expatinbasel.com/) … that’sa kind of an entry ticket. You might try it without, but you wouldn’t like someof the consequences.

Tuesday, 19-Feb-2013, from 18:00: Guggekonzert, BaselBarfüsserplatz/Marktplatz

Tuesday, 19-Feb-2013, from 18:00: Ladärne-Usstellig(Lantern Exhibition), Basel Münsterplatz

There’s a lotmore of events, and more info on http://fasnacht.ch/

Definitely don't use a flash at Morgestreich. Lots do, but it annoys the participants, who end up semi-blind in their masks.

Probably the same for Chienbäse. You're mainly taking pics of fire anyway, so there's no point overpowering it with flash. (My avatar is from Chienbäse).

Another thing to bear in mind about Chienbäse - it is very smoky - you, your clothes and your equipment will stink, so leave any super expensive stuff at home.

I'm away that weekend though, but I might be able to swing over to one of the events on the 19th.

Not literally "swing" obviously, I'm not Tarzan! I'll come over on the train.
