Definitely don't use a flash at Morgestreich. Lots do, but it annoys the participants, who end up semi-blind in their masks.

Probably the same for Chienbäse. You're mainly taking pics of fire anyway, so there's no point overpowering it with flash. (My avatar is from Chienbäse).

Another thing to bear in mind about Chienbäse - it is very smoky - you, your clothes and your equipment will stink, so leave any super expensive stuff at home.
Thanks for the tips. The photos on the Chienbäse website used flash so I'd assumed it was fine.

Not so worried about the smoke - wood smoke would be a pleasant change from the pungent tobacco smoke that the Swiss usually exhale

For me, I'd probably be able to make the Chienbäse event on the Sunday - 4am for the Monday event is optimistic at best for me. Possibly attending the Tuesday stuff with work colleagues but I'll bring my camera anyway. I'll confirm about Sunday once I check with the trouble and strife tonight.

Re: Basel Photoclub

Ok, I've been given a pass for Sunday night for Chienbäse so will be going to take some photos.
I've been advised to take the train so can I suggest that we meet at Basel SBB at 17:50, with view to get tickets and leave around 18:00? Trains are roughly every 15 minutes so should get there in time for the 19:15 kick-off.
I'll put another post in the social forum with details. Please let me know if you are able to join me.

Re: Basel Photoclub

Photos from Chienbase last night, after a bit of tweaking in PS to remove a lot of noise. Thanks to those that made it, it was a great night and hopefully we can arrange another meet soon. Also got some photos from the Fasnacht parade today but they are still on the G12 so will get to them later in the week.

Full gallery of photos are here: http://www.dennis-and-fiona.co.uk/?page_id=2187

Lights out

Interesting fire protection

We really did get this close!

Got the focus slightly wrong but a good shot showing a shed load of embers

Fire & water

I am so going to copy this idea next year.

Nice pics! Looks like you had some good "seats", too

My husband and I were about 3 people back from the edge (which I was glad for when some of those larger wagons rolled by )

I did some tweaking and some photos I left alone, but here's what I managed to shoot: dantesdame/chienbase/. I even took a short video of one of the wagons going through the gate. Nothing like see those flames dance to make it fearsome!

More photos from me. This time last nights Guggekonzert und Ladärne-Usstellig.

Saw these guys at the beginning at the night and then again as I went home 4 hours later. Impressive stamina

Confetti, everywhere

And the source of the confetti

These guys were well prepared. Hot chocolate from a thermos topped with whipped cream from a can. Genius!

Re: Basel Photoclub

Hey guys, I would love to join you soon on a photo trip.
Unfortunately I had an accident while snowboarding so I'm home for a few weeks, but after that I really need to get my gear out and shoot some photos!

Any plans already maybe?

Rough plan for the next trip was to visit the Photo flea market in Basel in March, and possibly pick up a few 2nd hand bargains.

6. Foto-Börse Binningen (bei Basel)
Datum:Sonntag24. März 2013
Ort:Kronenmattsaal
CH - 4102 Binningen
Zeit:10 - 16 Uhr

For the next meet I'm open to suggestions. I think in the summer we'll do a trip into the mountains for some landscapes or star trails but I'd like to do some strobist or light painting work making some orbs (example) or fire wheels while the evenings are still dark.

Re: Basel Photoclub

Oh that would be cool!
I think I can be able to walk a bit more by then.
Is the plan to meet somewhere and then go to the market together?

I would love to do some astronomy (star trails, milky way) shots from high points in the Alps, but I didn't find anyone crazy enough to join me on such a trip.
I would love to do something like that!

I also like night photography, but I can only be more mobile from end next month I think.

Re: Basel Photoclub

I think the rough plan would be to do the market in the afternoon and possibly do a night shot that evening but depends on if you want to lug all your gear to Binningen and back for most of the day (my bag is >10kg so I'd notice it after a while!)

Trip to the mountains sounds like a plan. Haven't looked into the logistics of it yet but I was thinking a trip to Aletsch glacier, setting up near Bettmerhorn so the glacier is to the north and we can aim at the north star to get the wheel effect like the shot below. Haven't shot the milky way before - never had the aperture, ISO or dark skies to shoot it - so willing to give that a go too.

Re: Basel Photoclub

Hi,

I was one of the main 3 organisers of the original group along with Begga ( now deceased) and Chris. The main reason why the original group stop functioning was that events were arranged and then only a few people turned up. It seemed keen to do something but then when it came down to did not turn. Which meant in the end it was just the 3 of us arranging things and after while it just got frustrating.

I am definitely interested in taking part in any events that are arranged and hopefully this time it will more than just a very small core of people.

I am looking forward to it.

Martin

Re: Basel Photoclub

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the background on the group. For me, I'm happy to organise things and if other members want to join then so much the merrier. Photography is a hobby of mine and while I prefer meeting up with other folks to share ideas, perspectives, and sometimes gear, I'm not adverse to going off by myself either. My general impression from the forum is that there is a constant stream of folks moving into and out of Basel due to work or lifestyle so I anticipate numbers to change over time.

I was quite fortunate that my old camera club, again run online via a photography forum, had a lot of members (30+) so arranging a meet invariably meant we had at least 5 people turn up. The group was geographically "the south east of England" which covers a lot of area (Kent, Essex, Surrey, London, Hertfordshire etc. so depending on the location it just wasn't feasible for everyone to turn up. Out of 60 events in 5 years, I probably made 8 or 9, purely because of time or place wasn't convenient.

I've got a few ideas for later in the year which we might even link with the Zurich toggers for a day trip somewhere. Zurich is only an hour away - it used to take me that long to travel to London for a shoot.

Hey All

Mostly I am here as a silent reader. I come from Indonesia and studying in Luzern, Switzerland at the moment for BA program in Hospitality Management. I just moved from Luzern to Basel this February and will staying here around 6 months for doing my internship in Pratteln area. I lived in kleinbasel and sometimes wondering if there is any photo club in Basel and finally I found this.
I wish I can going to the upcoming event (If I have day off) to get more skills in photography. I just start to like it and I am really new in this field.
I also have a flickr acc in http://www.flickr.com/photos/budhiastramade/ and personal blog on http://budhiastramade.tumblr.com/
And I also can make friends with same interest on me

I definitely want to get out more, the only problem for me now is that I can't walk and lift for too long (broke my back while snowboarding), but for example tomorrow I will be in Basel with some friends to take photos.

Maybe someone wants to join?

Re: Basel Photoclub

If you guys do decide to get together with Zurich based photographers, I'd be interested in coming along. But I am a shift worker (office 24/7) so my availability is always going to be hit and miss.

Did a nice trip in Dec with a couple of guys, midweek to Schilthorn. Excellent, and only 2 other people up at the resturant. Scenery was all ours :-)

Welcome to the "club" Mahendra. Let us know what sort of things you're interested in shooting as things haven't been planned past March yet. Next meet will be at the end of March - details to follow.

Just saw this. For some reason the email updates didn't work. Did you get any good shots?

Cheers Chris. I'll be in touch later in the year. Was thinking about a trip to the mountains for some star trails once the weather improves a bit. Also had a vague notion of a 28 days later shoot early one morning on the 22nd or 23rd June on the longest day of the year. Need a busy city though for max effect and Basel doesn't cut it. Maybe Zurich would be a better fit?

I ended up not going to Basel last sunday.
I just drove around in the black forest but didn't find the best locations.

I would love to join for taking photos in Zürich!

Re: Basel Photoclub

Hi everyone,
first of all nice meeting you(Dennis and others) and had a lot of fun in our little Fasnacht shoot. Unfortunately shots I got were very noisy(ISO 6400 on Nikon D7000)...very nice pics from Dennis btw!
Count me in for the Foto-Börse and also for a shoot afterwards. Aslo looking very much forward for landscape sessions/day-trips - love to shoot landscapes the most. As long as we plan long enough ahead looks like we can get quite a few people to join?
Cheers,
Sander
