Hi Guys,

It was nice to see everyone last night , I think we got a quite a few good ideas;
  • The Roman Ruins
  • Herbmesse
  • A day trip to Bern
  • The panto at Martin's theater group
  • Donarch Castle
  • HDRs
  • Another Long Exposure shoot
  • Pie Princess's 'Model Village' idea (fraid I can't remember the full details of this one, sorry!)
So, which do we all want to do first please?
This is the sort of look I was talking about trying. I've seen similar things done in another Flickr Basel group by the docks near to where Germany, Switzerland and France meet. Apparently there is a tower over that way that you can go up to get a nice elevated view. Perhaps going up the munster might work too? Not sure when either are open though.

The technique is called "Tilt-Shift". Google it to find a variety of sites offering examples and tutorials. That would be a fun outing.

Re: Basel Photoclub

Sounds interesting, I never get enough of climbing up the Munster tower, good workout
Since we didn't do any photos on our social meet, I am a bit needy now so I was going to ask if anyone is in the mood next sunday?
I don't think I have time to read'n'learn about the Tilt-Shift before sunday... but anyway, anyone in the mood for sunday?

The easiest ways to do this:
  • tilt-shift lens - a specialist lens, used mostly for architectural shots
  • Lensbaby (Fr 150-200) - actually a selective focus lens, not a true T-S
  • upload your photo to this Flash Tiltshift Generator or to tiltshiftmaker.com - it helps if the shot was taken from a hill, tower or high building so that the fake shallow depth of field accentuates the "model village" effect
This last case is where a special outing might make sense.

A Flickr user in Zürich has some examples of tilt-shift done at ground level, using a specialist lens. Here are Lensbaby shots on Flickr.

Achieving the tilt-shift look is also easily executed in Photoshop with just a few mouse clicks. For our purposes, I think the software method, either through one of the online generators mentioned above or with Photoshop (or similar), was the intended method for achieving the effect.

And for the HDR people, I have also seen tilt-shift coupled with HDR for some dramatic results.

Re: Basel Photoclub

I just found your link and would like to know if the group is still going. And if so when you meet, where you meet, etc. Have been tinkering with some photos and techniques, but can't seem to achieve what I have in mind. Not sure if this is due to may lack of skills or lack of proper equipment. . . . .
If you're still around and about, would love hearing from you and joining up - if you really are open to beginners wanting to learn.

thanks -
j

Hi J,

Yep, we're still going, we had a meet yesterday evening actually for Herbstmesse.
We try to meet up every couple of weeks, mostly in and around Basel but sometimes venturing further out. All the meets are posted on the EF calendar and this thread. The next one hasn't been organised yet, so watch this space!

Anyone's welcome in the group, including beginners, so please feel free to pop along next time.
In the mean time, here's the Flickr group we post on, so you can see what we've been up to recently;

Re: Basel Photoclub

Thanks, will keep an eye out for the next meeting. Does your group organize classes, or are the meetings kind of "mini courses"? I have lots of questions . . .

Looking forward to it.

We don't really do anything formal like classes. We usually meet up then go out and take some pics, and ask each other questions along the way.
There's quite a range of experience in the group, all the way up to the pros, so theres bound to be someone around who can anwser any questions you've got

Hi and welcome to the forum.
We don't have email lists, it is best if you can keep your eyes on the social event calender. Hopefully the next event will be 14. November, but we are still waiting for a reply from a certain people if it is doable.

Re: Basel Photoclub

Hi All, just wondered if anyone was interested in meeting tonight - It's the start of a series of Jenny Holzer projections around Basel - starting across the river towards the Munster - Should make for interesting shots with the big wheel behind...

Well it starts from 7.30 pm so I'm heading down there around then (Oberer Rheinweg & Riehentorstrasse - Directly Opposite the Munster Wall). I'll check the site later to see if anyone will be there.

You're going to hear from a lot of people soon if you post your real email address in a google-indexed forum like this one :-(

Re: Basel Photoclub

Hello,

I have been doing some black and white 35mm photography and I was wondering if there is anywhere in town that rents out dark rooms (and chemicals etc.) that doesn't cost a fortune. Otherwise does anyone know of a cheap place to have the film processed and printed?

Cheers

Sara
