City/Town: Zurich
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Thalwil train station, Lake side

This is a challenging and relatively fast (25kph) ride in the hills just outside of Zurich, that we do (almost) every Thursday... It is intended for cyclists who are experienced with biking hills and looking for a ride to challenge themselves to ride harder than they might on their own (or for the super-fit to push the rest of us!).

No ride if raining... And bring lights for your bike if you can - It can get dark toward the end of the ride.

Meeting Place: Thalwil train station, lake side (across from Kiosk)

Start Time: 6:30 pm

Distance: 50 km (~30 miles)

Climbing: a lot! (usual route is 900-1000 m / more than 3,000 ft elevation gain)

Ride Time: 2-2.5 hours

Speed: Average around 23-25 kph usually (14-16 mph)

Route: Similar to past ones, possibly with a few new "variations" (to keep it interesting!)

Post-ride drinks & food: At "The Hillseekers' Haus"

Please note Group Cycling Safety guidelines here... Everyone rides at their own risk.

  • ironman51 - I have just seen about it. I live in Horgen, quite close and time is perfect, but for I have already done a good bike yesterday and tonight I have planned an "easy" 12km run. If I can not be there I will join for sure next week. Great idea. ...
  • litespeed - Injured from squash today, and gotta be up at 4am for work :-(
RSVP'd No: 5
  • Dr D - too much on this week, have fun
  • sylvain74 - too much for me as well. I'll try to resist the call of the Thurs. Nite Ride this time.
  • Yokine - Fair weather roadie I am.
  • Uncle Max - Sounds a bit too easy for me, I wouldn't want to intimidate anyone ...joke
  • mblume - work work work
RSVP sign-ups for this event are now closed.

Great idea! Let's make the most of Thursdays' daylight

Edit: sorry, I'm going to bail on this one... I've made of most of too many days daylight this week...

You guys who said "No" are not getting out that easy... I understand needing to work -I do too - But it's June! The summer is short, so shouldn't we make the most of it... Besides it's light until after 9pm now, and you're not working that late are you Come out and meet us along the route if you can...

And the weather looks good for tonite - Better every hour today - Let's hope that's true...

my two cents (probably too late), September and early nights are not so far away. Seize the day.

Did the Raten Pass after all - And still with daylight to spare Even with the puncture (hope you made it back to civilization, Alex!)

Another fun ride - Thanks guys! We will have to do that route again sometime soon, while we can...

Thanks everyone for your help on the puncture! I made it all the way to Wadenswil when the air let out again directly on cue in front of the train station . Hope everyone enjoyed the pass! I'll see you all next week with two shiny new tires.

Re: Thursday Nite Road/Racing-Bike Ride (Zurich)

flats- people get those over in Switzerland? that may be the first on a group ride in zurich.

Count yourself lucky for being able to ride on non-trash strewn streets.

In the group rides I have done over in Nyc, there is at minimum of one flat per ride. Probably doesn't help that we start our rides by spending the first 5 plus miles cycling through the Bronx....the upside is I have become an expert at flat changing...

stellar ride all! How sweet it is to be able to climb a pass on a school night!

Very happy to hear you made it back to the train station Alex. Rattenpass has your name on it for next time.

Now I've got this great bike messenger image of Dakman, darting through the NYC yellow cabs, bolting down one-way streets (the wrong way), and riding with an enormous, fat security chain strapped to the bike.

nice to hear from you mate -- we miss you over here and hope NYC is treating you well!

We should have used CHF rather than one of those cheap Euro bank notes - that repair should have been good for a few thousand km's !!!

Sure that won't be the last time we head out to knock off a proper pass on a school night. Need to get more numbers though, it was just Howard and I versus the Hillseekers by the end of the ride - made us feel very vulnerable !!!!
