Colmar Christmas Markets Day Trip

Hi Everyone,

At our last event, Phil suggested we should venture beyond the city limits and visit the Christmas markets across the border in Colmar. So here we go!

We'll take the direct train from Bahnhof SBB to Colmar, leaving at 0918 and arriving in Colmar just before 1000. The return train leaves at 1624, getting back to Bale at 1709.
You'll need to book your tickets though the TGV Europe website, and the whole trip currently costs about 40CHF.

There's five markets this Christmas, each offering different stuff, so I thought we'd do a lap of all of them plus the outdoor ice rink.

There's also various exhibitions around the town, including one by local artists such as gilders and glassblowers I though could be interesting at stop F (this one has a €1 entrance fee).

Is there going to be a meeting point in Basel or everybody just jump on the train?

Marta, it sounds like they're going to be meeting at the train station. Likely you can get a few folks who are going to name a convenient spot in / near the train station to meet up though as otherwise it could be quite "interesting" trying to find anyone.


I wish I could go, it sounds fantastic! Unfortunately (or fortunately depending upon view ) I will be in the Chicago area at that time as it is Thanksgiving weekend.

Hi Marta,

Sorry, I should have been more specific about the meeting point.
PegA's right, it's Bahnhof SBB (the station you'll arriving in if you come from Zurich by train). We'll meet in the main ticket hall, under the big sign next to the stairs. We'll have to go thought to the French side of the station, so we'll meet up at 9 and then head off.

Also, another thing that I only just thought of, everyone please make sure you bring your passports. If you don't have an EU passport, please make sure your visa covers France and that you have the proper paperwork with you.
I doubt we'll be checked (it hasn't happened to me yet), but better safe than sorry!

Hi Marta.
I checked SBB.ch with trains from Zurich to Colmar that day so that you could arrive at same time as we, but there is no direct train, only with a stop in Basel anyway.

Hello everyone! I've just introduced myself in the club's main thread...I have just arrived in Basel from Argentina and am really looking forward to meeting other photography enthusiasts and learning from each other.
The Colmar trip sounds very interesting, I'm definitely going! I'll try to get the tickets online, or can you just book them? Either way is fine for me.

I went two times to Colmar last summer with my visitors, really love the city.

I just went into the station to buy my ticket (like the boy scouts, be prepared) the guy behind the desk said that its better to get it there as when you are returning the same day they reduce the cost. My return ticket cost me 30 CHF. thought i should tell the rest of you before you get it online.
