City/Town: Elm, GL
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Schwanden, GL train station

We completed the first EF snowshoe trek on Sunday, January 10 up in the Matt, Glarus region near Elm and the day was a great success.

Snowshoe trekking doesn't require any real practise other than the ability to put the gear on and dress according to the prevailing weather conditions. You'll need to be physically fit for this trip as we'll be covering about 12kms and a 600meter altitude difference, so if you can jog for an hour or so without requiring a helicopter to get you home, you're in.

I'll update the thread to this calendar event as we see how many people sign up with regards to meeting place and how we're going to get ourselves down to deepest Glärnerland. (BTW - snowshoes aren't shoes as such; they're plates that you attach to your hiking boots which have metal grips mounted on plastic plates which pivot as you walk. You don't sink into deep snow when you're wearing them).

Come and enjoy the stunning Swiss landscape in its full winter glory, get fit and meet a bunch of great outdoor fans.

Re: Snowshoe trekking - Winter Wonderland

Sorry, but I think I'll give this a miss. I do some hiking, but only up to 10k (on easy routes). If you are planning on some "beginners" snow shoe trekking run, let me know...

"Snowshoe trekking doesn't require any real practise other than the ability to put the gear on and dress according to the prevailing weather conditions."

If you live in Zug, there are at least three shops within 100 metres of Bahnhof, which either sell or rent snowshoes.

First check the one closest: once you step out from the bahnhof platform 1 side, turn left on Baarerstrasse. You'll find a bike and snowsports shop about 50 m ahead. Enter the shop and head down the basement. There they sell, as well as rent snowshoes for 25 chf per day. And the guy speaks excellent English . Note: there are only 2 pairs for rent, so high demand during weekends and good weather forecats, so I hope I will be there before you this time

A little ahead, there is a dedicated mountain wear shop that sells.

Oschners shoes in Metalli also sells a range of snowshoes.

I suggest you rent it the first time, and then decide whether to buy.

The other things you will need are Gaiters (cost about 70 CHF for knee high ones in Oschners, check out the front left corner on upper level. But I am not happy with this model, I wish I had found a smaller model that only covers the ankles ), one or a pair of trekking poles, and thermos flask if you dislike drinking from frozen water bottles at altitude.

Re: Snowshoe trekking - Winter Wonderland

Well folks, it's Monday and it's been snowing so we'll have enough to look forward to. We'll make the go/no go choice Friday midday based on the weather situation and avalanche bulletins.

In the meantime, anyone pondering whether they should join, please sign up, we're not trapping Yetis, just out to enjoy the Swiss landscape in winter.

Re: Snowshoe trekking - Winter Wonderland

I would like to join this saturday. Haven't done any snowshoe walking before, but now that i'm in Switzerland i would like to give it a try.

However, just like Halfasleep, i don't have snowshoes. Does anyone know if i could rent them somewhere around Basel? Or could they also be rented at Metmen?

thanks

Athleticum normally rent them. If you pick them up Friday afternoon, you don't need to return them until Monday morning for one day's rental price.

Re: Snowshoe trekking - Winter Wonderland

Ok, thanks for the info.

Didn't know about them. As they are just two tram stops further than my normal stop i will pass by there today after work and verify renting period and availability.

If that works out i'm almost sure to join!
I only need to make sure work doesn't follow me home this weekend.

Don't forget poles as well. I think a day's rental for poles and snow shoes is 19CHF in total.

well the poles i have, so don't need to rent these. however they do charge me a two day price, for that they should then not complain that i return them monday late (as they're not open on monday before i leave for office)

So i passed by there this evening and they have plenty. Didn't know this place but actually looks as a great places for sports equipment in Suisse, hadn't been germany so close . My reservation for tomorrow is made and i will join for the snow shoe trail, although it will be waking up extremely early.

Looking forward to seeing you saturday morning, and i'm in contact with Rabina for the transportation.

Did you manage to arrange your snow shoes?
If not send me a PM if you'd like me to bring a second pair from Athleticum. i made my reservation today, and as written they have many snow shows for rent, and when i bring one set why shouldn't I be able to bring a second set.

what i think would need to know are your measures for shoe size and weight (these were the only two things i was asked to making my reservation)

Offer valid till 5 pm on friday

Re: Snowshoe trekking - Winter Wonderland

Everyone who signed up for this event has been sent an e-mail with all the details. Due to avalanche warnings, we have chosen to take an alternative route rather than the one originally planned.
