Lausanne Thursday Night Social at Taco's (Mar 18, '10)

I went a couple of times during the summer at MGM. One of the reasons that I stopped going was that I often could not identify the group, though i found out that randomly going up to people asking if they were part of the English Forum group was a great way to pick up guys.

Is there anything that can be done, which doesn't look too dorky to be able to identify the group?

For the first few months (must have been back in 2007, I think), we tried to bring along a stuffed moose and put it on the table to help people to find us. Almost nobody found it before finding us in another way, and everyone said that they had assumed it would be a much bigger moose. It was also difficult for the owner to remember to bring it each time and remember to pick it up to take it home, plus it required the owner to come every time and to be on time. So, that didn't really work, and I think that most physical items will entail similar problems.

Since those early days, we've not worried too much about making ourselves easy to identify. A lot of people seem to find us quite successfully by themselves, and if I see anyone wandering around the bar looking a bit lost then I will ask them if they are looking for us - often they are.

In Taco's, we are in a pretty consistent location - almost always by the big pillar that is right in front of the main bar. You have to walk past this area when you enter the bar, and also if you try to buy a drink, so it's pretty hard to miss us. There aren't many English-speaking people in most bars in Lausanne, so just asking each group of English-speaking people that you find is normally a pretty quick and effective way to find us, and because we're in quite a prominent place, we are the first group that most people who use this strategy try to ask.

Do you have other suggestions for methods that we could use?

We could always do the signal at regular intervals. Say, every 10 minutes?
