Although Wiki isn't necessarily the most "respected" of sources, this link will at least give you some idea:

Among my family and friends, many of whom have family who emigrated to the US in the early 1900s, there are many Irish relatives, particularly some of my friends who's families settled in the Chicago area.
For us, many are Catholic and while our older relatives celebrate the religious Saint's Day that is St. Patrick's Day, for others who are less connected to the church tend to celebrate it more as a sort of connection to family.
Of course, it being a celebration, there was plenty of alcohol involved. St. Pat's was one of the few nights that none of us worried about having to be designated driver, we enjoyed Corned Beef and Cabbage at whomever had the largest apartment, all got dressed there and all chipped in for a cab ride out and home again.
I'm *sure* it has gotten somewhat "*******ized" over time and without the connection to the Catholic Church and all, but still, for us it was always a nice opportunity to get together with other friends of Irish descent.
