City/Town: Basel
Event Type: Coffee/Chat
Meeting Point: Starbucks, Steinenvorstadt

We certainly needed to talk about Kevin last time: as predicted, the story of a mother of a mass murderer certainly provoked plenty of discussion. We did all agree that it was pretty depressing and that the author obviously wasn't a mother herself. So on to....

The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry this time. Still a theme of mental illness (is it the weather that's set us out on this thread?) but no more crossbows

We talked over the venue issue: but ironically of course this time Starbucks was only half full and with only about 8 of us attending it was really pleasant. So we decided to keep it as "same place, same time" - but thought that if next time we discover that it's full again (or number of registrations goes over 8 before the day),that we'll move to All Bar One a few doors down. So if you register, make sure you have a look at the posting again on the day itself. Hope this is not too confusing.

See you all in June when hopefully we can be wearing sunglasses. Yah.

Re: Basel Book Club

Even though I did not show up (was busy with paperwork that day) I did read the book. I was told the girl that proposed the book did not show up as well?
Nice! ... I suggest next time we have the book present before we choose to read it or not...

Re: Basel Book Club

Whoops, I'm afraid I can't make the June date, I'll be on holiday and the Secret Scriptures was my suggestion. Does that mean I'll be in trouble?? If so, maybe we could swap it with the Good Girl? But maybe that would muck up everyone's reading schedule?

The Kevin book was good for discussion and the venue worked fine this time. I could actually hear people! I see they're making a film of Kevin, starring Tilda Swinton. Not sure I'll be rushing to see it!

Re book choices - I think we're still suffering the backlash against Eat Pray Love....

Re: Basel Book Club

@ Rachel: LOL I am by no means the owner of the bookclub and it was just a suggestion I mean how can someone propose the Kevin book then leave? LOL. I am reading the Scripture book and it is a bit slow at the beginning but I hope it will become a bit faster.
I will be there right after my holiday trip

@Sonrisa: Yes...You are absolutely right

Re: Basel Book Club

My two cents are that of course it's great when the person suggesting the book can come as then, if some others didn't like it too much, we have someone who is able to point out the good aspects. However, sometimes it just happens that the "suggestor" can't make it. It should not put anyone off making a suggestion in the future.

The fun thing about the book club, I find, is that you get the chance to read books, or types of books, you might normally never even consider. That means sometimes you sigh and moan and growl your way through tomes that you find boring, turgid, ridiculous (and yet ironically, you often remember these best and with a grin). But often too you end up discovering an author or genre that you love. So, it's swings and roundabouts.

Re: Basel Book Club

@kgsherm

you'd be most welcome. there are several book shops in Basel - try Thalia or Bider & Tanner. Or order via Amazon. Often you can borrow copies from others if they've read it way in advance.

I order my books from book depository They offer free delivery to Switzerland and the books are UK prices so alot cheaper than you can find here.
