Halloween

Anyone reading this have a young child that they want to go trick or treating with? If so, where are you going? This is the second year we are struggling to find an area we can go and do so. I`m actually thinking of starting my own trick or treating tradition around my neighborhood and have families join us as we walk from door to door!
If you are a) know of a neighborhood that we can go to that is trick or treating friendly or b) want to join us to not miss out let me know!!

Re: Halloween

I think it's quite sad how it seems to have died out. I was back in the UK last year during halloween and hardly any kids from the neighborhood came knocking. Unfortunately parents are just too scared to let their kids out alone at night, while also not having the time to accompany them. Very sad indeed.

Let us know how it goes

I think it is just starting to get going here in Europe. and plenty of people let their kids out alone. It has never been a custom here so it needs time to get going

Re: Halloween

Personally, I prefer Räbeliechtli ... carving out those turnips is great fun, and a local tradition!!

Re: Halloween

I had about 4-5 groups of visitors last year in Seefeld. Its actually funny as they pressed all the buzzers at the apartment door and you see all of the neighbours popping out of the doors - then some just ignoring and going back in.

This was quite early in the evening (6 ish) and teh kids were with parents...all good.

Seefeld known for all the expats etc....is a friendly place I would say - but loits of apartment buildings which may be an issue.

You would be welcome at my building )

Re: Halloween

We have noticed how many ppl are absolutly against Halloween. Some ppl. do not want to have to answer the door! Some hate the fact that it is an American tradition. I think it is quite fun to have the little ones knock/ring and ask for a treat, they look so cute. It`s not much fun when the teens show up with no disguise/costume! Even in the states many parents can`t go trick or treat with the little ones or they have to do so early and that is sad because when they go to a home and no one is home then they do not get a treat! I love visiting the neighborshoods that get together and decorate the houses! Tons of fun!

Re: Halloween

Why would you continue an american tradition outside america? As much as I like stuff from home, its neither the place nor time. I mean, as an Australian I don't continue to have a massive bbq, get drunk and run naked around zurich on the 26th of January

As an Australian; I definitely do. Why not? My un-Australian friends all enjoyed the random winter bbq and fun, and I didn't feel like I was 'missing out' by not being in Aus to celebrate. It was a great day.

There is a big halloween party for children held by the American Womens Club, there should be about 300 kids or so

you originally compared them in a similar way and now you are saying they are completely different...so no, I don't. You don't have to go knocking on everyones door at halloween with your children anyway- throw a party or go to one. I just don't think 'leave your traditions at home' is a good attitude.

Hey im not trying to be rude its a difference of opinion. And people can do whatever the hell they want in their own places. But I came to another country to experience the culture and to embrace local customs no matter how weird they might be (Sechselaeuten was kinda bizarre). And I also feel that Halloween is one of those traditions that forces people to submit somewhat. So in that case I wouldnt be at all surprised if some people in Switzerland didn't like it

yes that is only because running around naked in zurich on the 26th of january will end up putting you in hospital with frost bite and hypothermia.

Re: Halloween

How old are your kids? I am not a parent myself but I work for a few families that have asked about putting together a night of trick or treating.

I also know about the Halloween party someone mentioned above, meant to be quite good actually- I will be there painting faces

Re: Halloween

Thanks for that. Unfortunately it has was reserved for members only due to the volume of request. We attended the pumpkin carving last year, but really felt like outsiders as we are not members. We tried chatting up a few people and left feeling as if we were not good enough to converse with. To be fair there a few friendly people, but the overall vibe was awkward and we decided not to join.
