Gosh, what a weekend!
Thank you, Olygirl, for drawing our attention to this event. It was brilliant! The band, contrary to expectations, were fantastic; everyone we met at the event was lovely; the Guinness was delicious; the whiskey even more so; and the honey herb liqueur was
evil (and delicious).
I particularly enjoyed the brief Slade interlude at our table. I am also told that there was some drinking-vessel percussive action going on, although my memories of that part of the evening are a little vague.
We have both been very impressed by everything and everyone we have encountered during our stay in Schwyz. The hotel in which we stayed was comfortable, with very friendly and accommodating staff (we rolled down for breakfast at 9.59, and still got service with a smile). We wandered up to the Gesslerburg, which is a lovely spot, complete with restored water wheel and mill pond - like something out of the Hobbit. We ate in a cosy Stube attached to a Michelin listed restaurant, and were very impressed with the quality of the food - not to mention the prices (under 20CHF for each main course)!
All in all, it seems that I've been unfairly harsh on the canton of Schwyz. In all the time I've been in Switzerland, I've rarely encountered such abundant warmth and friendliness from strangers. It was like being back in Leicestershire again!
Thanks again for letting us know about this. It has turned out to have been one of the best weekends we've ever enjoyed together... and all because we thought we'd have some fun at the expense of some earnest Swiss musicians...
Slainte mhaith!
