Which Resort For Ski Novice?

Hey everyone,

I am just looking into booking some Skiing lessons now that the season is nearly upon us. I have never skied before. Unfortunately I will not be able to do something like 4 weekends in a row as I head back to the UK often. I think the best option for me would be to have an afternoon of private tuition every 3 or 4 weeks. Whilst I realise this is going to be expensive, given how infrequently I can go I think it will be the most productive (thoughts welcome) rather than group lessons.

Someone recently recommended heading over to Villars. To me the schools look good, it is very good for beginners and it is somewhere I can easily get to from Geneva and back in a day. Should I also be looking into other resorts? I do not drive so will be relying on trains/buses and ideally do not want to go somewhere more than two hours from Geneva. If I have to pay for private lessons then I do not want to also pay for accommodation at a resort.

Any thoughts would be welcome as I am starting to get bogged down searching through all the resorts around Geneva and comparing costs, quality, distance, etc.

Thanks a lot

Unfortunately, the OP won't find too much (yet) around the Romandie region on that site. But there was a thread on here yesterday where someone from Geneva was looking for resorts to learn skiing near VD. I don't have time to look for it now but the search function should bring it up.

You could also take a look at Leysin or Les Mosses. Not sure about the Public Transport situation for either of those though.

+1; Les Diablerets & Villar/Bretaye too

Les Diablerets, Villar/Bretaye & Leysin all have narrow gauge railways from Aigle

To drive to Les Diablerets/Leysin/Les Mosses you drive up from Aigle to Les Sépey. From here the road divides.

Google maps

To drive to Villar/Bretaye you go up from Ollon (just past Aigle)

If you fancy some high-altitude easy skiing, then the top runs on Glacier 3000 could be a consideration. Very expensive though for a couple of blue runs (60CHF-ish/day)

Thats an easy answer. Get your skis and get on any Geneva road today. Perfectly flat so good for novices and loads of snow!
