[Zurich] Any skateboarders arnd?

Hey guys,

Am pretty intrigued by this sport recently, and would like to try it out. Though, am 23 and I sometimes feel I may be a bit old for this sport . What do you guys think, anyone here does any skate boarding?

No,
I dont think you are too old!! at just 23 !! come on
The older you are the more it seems to hurt when you fall but thats
about the only difference in being old or young.
I know people who are way into their 30's or even in their 40's who still enjoy the sport.

Re: [Zurich] Any skateboarders arnd?

Well first of all its never to late. Im still skating and am 28.

It can be in some ways easier becuase you can understand and comprehend alot more now than before which means you can learn easier (this is all my opinion but my opinion is right!)

There are a few spots to skate which are free in Zurich, check this thread i made a while ago it has a lot of info on skate spots etc http://www.englishforum.ch/sports-fi...ns-zurich.html

It also depends on what kind of skateboarding you want to try, street/ramp skateboarding, freestyle skateboarding, downhill skateboarding, slalom skateboarding etc etc etc

feel free to ask me if you need any help with stuff.

Re: [Zurich] Any skateboarders arnd?

From what I could figure about these different forms of skateboarding from the net, seems like I'm interested in street/ramp, and freestyle skateboarding. I'm not sure what's the different between the two though; I guess the former is more for going arnd in streets as the name suggests, and the latter is about the cool dude tricks you can do.

For me, I'm looking into using skateboards as a means of transportation (so to say), and to spend a nice and sunny sunday evening in a skate(board)park trying out tricks. Any suggestions?

The most important thing I'm looking for is company though, it would be nice to have a bunch of people doing skateboarding, and catch up stuff from them; plus would be more fun that ways .

Well transportation on a street skateboard is not so much fun because its quite slow in comparison to a slalom board but still possible.

As for doing it with other people, if you skate down to a location there will always be people there you can chat to ect.

I dont really do much street or ramp skating myself.

You're right. Looks like slalom board is the one for transportation purposes. Do you have recommendations for a good shop to buy 'em?

If you want to get a new one, you should go to roll-laden.tv there are inbetween the main station and langstrasse.

Really friendly guys, tell them Lee Diamant from Airflow skateboards sent you and they will take care of you.

you can test a board etc before you buy

I've a burning question that I wanna ask. Now that my mind is almost set for Slalom skateboards, I've been wondering how do they handle jumping to/from street curbs, doesn't seem like you can jump with them, considering they're concave in shape.

Well there are different kinds you can get. Some do have a tail so you can lift the front wheels up for small edges.

They have much bigger and softer wheels so it doesnt catch like a normal skateboard.

Otherwise you can get whats called "sky hooks" for your board.

If you check the attachement (these are a few of my boards) you will see the one at the far left, its blue and has some shiney silver hooks on it.

Basically you can put your feet under those hooks and ride it like a snowboard. Its great fun, you can learn to jump instantly and get air over around 1 meter within a couple of weeks of riding.

I can peform without any ramps straight from the curb to the street, 180, 360's all kinds of grabs, its good fun!

I tried to find a video clip, this was the only one I could find.

Re: [Zurich] Any skateboarders arnd?

So, I did go to Roll Laden, and met with the coolest dudes on the planet. Knowing that I was trying skateboarding for the first time, they just gave me an old slalom (S shaped) skateboard to try out, before I make up my mind about the kind of skateboard I'll buy. I don't need to pay anything if I eventually buy a skateboard, and if I don't, then I just pay like a ridiculously small amount (something like 5 CHF). I asked them if they need a security deposit, because I was taking their skateboard and protective stuff (helmet, arm pads, knee pads etc.), the response I got was, "We trust you!". So, I'm probably gonna try out a couple of different skateboards, before I finally order one for myself.

Btw, I tried it over the weekend, and quite pleasantly surprisingly I'm going pretty good at it, good enough to roll around on the streets, without bumping into people/things. I guess part of it could be because I used to do skating when I was a kid.

Re: [Zurich] Any skateboarders arnd?

Btw, another thing, (maybe this should be a new thread), how about the legality of skateboarding in Zürich, are there places you're not supposed to be rolling in? At first look, it may seem like a ridiculous question, but I came across this video, and it doesn't look good...

Re: [Zurich] Any skateboarders arnd?

Here's what the law says about skateboards, inline skates, micro scooters and similar means of transport, in a nutshell:
  • It's allowed to use them in pedestrian areas, on bicycle paths and on streets with a 30 km/h speed limit.
  • Pedestrians have the right of way.
  • Skaters must carry a light when they use bicycle paths or Zone 30 streets during the night.
  • Breaking these rules results in fines of 10-30 Fr. (Impact on insurance coverage in case of an accident might be more important )

Are you sure you want to put your phone number out there, for the whole world to see? - apart from that it's not permitted here.

It could end up printed on a card and put inside several phone booths.
