Skitouring / Off piste skiing

Hi, I am looking for anyone who would be interested in one day skitouring or off piste skiing trips. Preferably an experienced skier. I am based in Zug, so I usually go to Engelberg and Davos.
Anyone interested, let me know.
Petr

Re: Skitouring / Off piste skiing

While there is stacks of snow and the conditions are wonderful, the avalanche danger is also very high at the moment (see todays map). So please be careful, take the gear you need and don't exceed your limits. Yes I know I sound like a mum, my apologies. But better safe than sorry

Re: Skitouring / Off piste skiing

I'll second that advice, dozens of people die in the Alps every year, mostly through ignorance.

Maybe you would like to join the Swiss Alpine Club, and meet similar enthusiasts?

Thanks guys for your comments, but you are preaching to the converted. I am a member of Swiss Alpine Club, have gone through avalanche training and have all the necessary equipment...

I spend a lot of time in the Chamonix valley, you would be surprised by the no of mountain guides who die each year. As you probably know the vast majority of people die when the risk is at 3.

Re: Skitouring / Off piste skiing

So anyway, after a brilliant day all round today - thanks Gully! - it's clear that there are quite a few others who'd be interested in the odd day with a mountain guide now and then, so I suggest perhaps we can get a group together for a little touring/freeride day...

Cool. Next weekend (jan 28 or 29) looks good for a day skitour around Engelberg. Let me know if you are up for it. We can organize a guide to take us around.

I had a blast in Verbier today, hopefully more will be open tomorrow. All of Chamonix was closed!

Hi! I work in Zug and live in Luzern now. I am very interested in such activities.
Actually I do not have skitour equipment but I have everything to go off-pistes. Where are you going next weekend?

Sorry just to clarify too, I'm up for off-piste downhill skiing, I'm not equipped for ski-touring!

As you probably know the vast majority of people die when the risk is at 3.
A discussion of avalanche risk on the French version of SwissInfo (did not find it on English version): Adeptes du hors-pistes majoritairement victimes d'avalanches:
Quote:
English translation by Google with some help from me:
Quote:
Properly assessment of the avalanche danger is made more difficult by the fact that fatal accidents do not occur mainly when the avalanche risk is "very strong" (level 5) or "high" (4), but when "marked" (3) or "limited" (2), according to the Institute for the Study of Snow and Avalanche Research, quoted by the bpa. These last two categories include 85% of fatal avalanches, against 10% for the first 2.

I would also be interested in this and would happily split the costs of a guide for either proper touring or general off-piste skiing. I cannot make this weekend but would be keen to join up on another occasion or alternative date.

Re: Skitouring / Off piste skiing

Hello everyone. I suggest to go for off-piste skiing for the starters. Weather forecast this Sunday in Engelberg looks ok. I will be there from 8:30 (bottom station to Titlis). If anybody wants to join, let me know. It is necessary to have transceiver, probe and shovel. If you have airbag back pack, bring it along.

Are you a guide? What qualifications do you have to take a group of strangers riding off-piste.

The poster will be taking legal responsibility for the group & could be charged under Art 117 in the event anybody dies. Being a 'friend' does not absolve anyone from criminal responsibility.

There was a case in October from an accident in Verbier nearly 5 years ago. The judge found the person 'not guilty' however the prececution has appealed the verdict.

Skiing on your own is dangerous, however sking with a group carries a different risks, I do both on a regular basis! Probably less legal risk in France.

Exactly my reason for asking. I only go off-piste with people I already know for this reason.

Also remember while Engelberg has great off-piste a few people tend to die there each year. Not always due to Avalanche, but due to falling off cliffs too.

You sure you want to take responsibility for people you don't know?

Thats what happened in bad weather in Verbier approx 200m from the lift station. It was actually a summer walking path marked on the map!
