Rock Climbing / Zurich Based

I have the equipment, a car, the desire but just need some outdoor climbing partners. I am comfortable leading up to a 5c / 6a outdoors.

If anyone is interested hit me up.

Steve

Hi,

I have the gear and the desire, but not too much time ... Maybe we can find a we to go outdoors. We're probably comparable in terms of climbing level.

CGreen,

Sounds cool but unfortunately I have never done any alpine climbing. I would need to get some training to learn the basics down before I ventured up a route

Cool, well if you've done some climbing and belaying there's not much more to it besides experience. A few extra rope techniques for on glaciers. Thats why starting on a really easy route is a good idea so you get the feel of the crampons and snow. Do you have crampons etc?

I'm up for climbing in some of the nicer Klettergartens around, such as Engi or Ibergeregg. I'm also an outdoor 5c/6a max. I do need to get a new rope, but otherwise have my own gear (incl. about 10 quickdraws).

I'm interested in Alpine climbing as well, but I'm not going to try it until I can afford to fork out for the "initial setup"...clothings, crampons, ice picks...it's expensive stuff (good ice picks are around 250chf each!!).

True that! Although to begin with for basic alpine mountaineering you'll want a single straight shaft alpine axe which is a lot cheaper. Unless you are wanting to pursue technical ice climbing which requires 2 axes, and they are alot more expensive.

If there were only more than 24 hours in a single day life would be so much easier, and fun.

Hi,

We should all meet one evening, have a beer and make some plans for climbing / alpine climbing.

Fine idea. I like beer and mountains. I'm away until Tues though, maybe after that sometime.

Re: Rock Climbing / Zurich Based

On a related note, anyone have recommendations for good indoor climbing gyms in town, preferably not (relatively) nose-bleed pricy? What with relocating and all, I've not put my harness on for far too long and would like to get back climbing.

Also, I am generally in favor of beer, though I'm not terribly skilled nor an outdoor climber.

Re: Rock Climbing / Zurich Based

I've never been there but there's a place called minimum bouldering in wolishofen which seems to be a bit smaller, cheaper and nicer than most. If you'd like some company, I'd be interested in trying some bouldering - really need to get climbing fit again.

Not such a big fan of bouldering (I prefer to go up, if you know what I mean ) but it's a good idea...

I'll be in touch.

If you don't want to pay try the Uni Irchel free wall - it is old school and you have to 'make your own route'. There are some decent problems one can devise there.

Importantly it is free

I'm liking the sound of free! Where is it located at the Uni?

Re: Rock Climbing / Zurich Based

It is in Irchelpark, if you take the tram to Milchbuck and walk into the park, it's on the left (north) side, there is a path that goes past the football and tennis fields (with the fields on the left), before the path goes under a "roof" the climbing wall is on the right. It is not very high though, I've never seen anyone there with a rope..

There is also an excellent bouldering wall at ETH Hönggeberg. From the bus station you walk towards the sport center (heading roughly east), it's close to the sport center entrance, on the other side of the pathway.

I went once to minimum bouldering, it was okay, pretty difficult problems though, it's a sort of a lifestyle-climbers kind of place . Only options that I know of for rope climbing are Schlieren and Milandia which are very expensive (imho), but big and with plenty of routes of all levels. Pretty crowded in the afternoons though and not inside zone 10, when I go to Schlieren I usually take tram 17 to the end station (inside zone 10) and then it's about 20 minute walk.

So who is hosting the planning / beer meeting?

Off to Zermatt, schönen wochenende.
