Best place to buy skis Zurich

Hi guys

Where do you think is the best place to buy new and decent skis near Zurich?

I did a few searches and it seems many of you buy online but I would rather go and speak to someone.

I am looking for a really good selection of top brands and good quality stuff.

Have heard of time out in user, anyone been?

Just been to Sport fabrik in vollketswil and was not impressed with the choice....

Thanks a lot :-)

Re: Best place to buy skis Zurich

Athleticum
Jelmoli
Radical
Oschner

All have a wide variety of what you could want. Radical bit more specialist. Jelmoli have quite a large selection if I recall.

I have never bought a pair from any though. I bought my first pair in the UK and then my other set on the forum.

EDIT POST IN REPLY AS EXCEEDED QUOTA:

Radical is on Seestrasse heading towards Kilchberg from Zurich, next to the Spar petrol station and Peugeot car dealership. They service my skis, and I get my bindings from them.

Athleticum is around the corner from Paddy Reillys pub, on the no.2 and no.9 tram route, opposite Saigon restaurant.

Oschner have a modest selection last time I was there. Jelmoli was better.

Thanks a lot.

Not sure where radical and athleticum are.

Do you think ochsner in bahnhofstrasse would have a good selection?

Also, I had thought of jelmoli but didn't know if thier selection would be that large.

Thanks so much :-)

Re: Best place to buy skis Zurich

I went to the Ochsner at the big shopping centre in Dietikon to get mine. Quite easy to get there from Zürich. The guys new what they were talking about and I got mine bascially half-price because I bought a model from the previous season.

I did look in the Migro XX outdorr store but when the guy started asking me what colour ski boots I wanted rather than helping decide what I actually needed based on my abilitiy I left.

Many stores have a rent-to-buy option, where you can rent skis for the season and then buy them in the end if you liked them. This can be very economical if the rentals are new.

If you are willing to pay up a bit for quality advise then I would suggest Och Sport (not to confuse with Ochsner) at Bahnhofstrasse, right at the Rennweg Tram stop.
Athleticum and Ochsner have a broad selection, but its offering is really for the wide mass of people. The advise and service quality is not nearly as good as the one offered by more specialized stores such as Och Sport and others. Not cheap though.

Any more good ski equipment stores in Zurich area?

I'm looking to buy new equipment after having not been on the slopes for 10 years and am looking for quality advice in a shop from a sales person who knows what (s)he's talking about. Specifically looking for downhill skiing.

Appreciate any recommendations.

In many shops you can rent ski boots and skis for a season, quite cheaply, and then you can easily change them if you are not happy.

Time Out in Uster seemed good to me - I hired boots and skis there a few weeks ago and the staff seemed pretty knowledgable. Will return to buy skis at some point. Check opening hours though (they may be closed Monday).

Athleticum is very close to Jelmoli. 450m according to Google. Seemed quite mid-range compared to Jelmoli but, again, helpful staff.

Re: Best place to buy skis Zurich

Personally, I would go to a resort and do performance/demo rentals of new models until you find what you like, and then find a store that carries them (or purchase them at the resort). For example, last year I found that I quite liked a particular Stöckli model and ended up buying from Stöckli Wädenswil. But however good the reviews/recommendations are, I would never have bought a higher end ski without a demo day.

Re: Best place to buy skis Zurich

to be honest, I would buy them in a resort. That way you can normal test the ski before you buy. Most sports shops offer that service. Hope that is of some help...

I would support the vote for ProSki - we have used them for hire and hire to buy for the last two years, and they are good, responsive and helpful

Re: Best place to buy skis Zurich

Sport Conrad is the best place for skis or ski hardware other than boots if you are any of the following:
- price sensitive
- ski regularly early / late season making skis a consumable item
- you have realized that technique not the model of skis makes the difference
- you are happy to do some research by reading a few reviews
- you just want a purple ski to match your outfit

The only excuse is that you want some Stockli lasers and can get an instructor's 40% discount (Ace1). Otherwise good skis available from 299chf which is less than a seasons rental from many shops. If you want advice, pick up the phone or ask someone here. Or if you are mad or just truly loaded please visit Och sport in Bahnhofstrasse and buy the chf 8000 Bentley branded skis they have in the window.

I like the service at Pro Ski in Thalwil and buy boots there. They offer a full range of boot fitting services and will expand a pair of 95mm lasted race boots boots to fit your 100mm feet with all their bony bits etc. This gives a pair of boot shells which hug your feet and mean your skis do whatever your legs tell them to do. This makes a big difference. Price is full retail but you can also pay 50% up front and hand the boots back after a season if you don't like them so it's an easy investment. Some in resort shops tend to offer this level of service, Stockli are also reputedly good, but it depends which sales assistant you get. With PS you deal with Rene who will be there next time you come back.

Many non specialist ski shops in ZH offer zero boot fitting and will happily sell you boots which are 2 sizes too big so that they are comfy off the shelf but will be sloppy and packed out in two weeks. The big box retailers do worse and only stock boots up to 100 flex, which is not good if you weigh more than 80kg and or ski fast with strong technique or want to do so in future. Rather than giving money to these people I would suggest trying on a wide selection of brands then shopping on ebay or Ricardo for second hand boots. There you can get some nice lightly used boots for chf 50ish per pair.

For kids gear I rent, going rate is about chf 100 for poles boots and skis per season. Unless you have 3 kids all of whom will grow at the same rate and like red skis this is most economical.

Re: Best place to buy skis Zurich

I've hired skis several times from Sport Pfister in Uster, they're friendly and helpful, and a few of the guys speak good English. Last year I hired skis for the whole season at a good price, which is great value if you aren't sure what type of skis you want to buy. You can change them out and try new ones during the season.

Good luck!

Re: Best place to buy skis Zurich

This indeed is good information. I have a query what does hire means. Does it mean you can hire for sometime and give it back. Is it something like a day charge or I am not sure. Would like to hear further. Thank you

Wow, that's some price drop, they were 9800 CHF when I saw them before Christmas, wonder if they would honour the 40% discount on those???

Re: Best place to buy skis Zurich

Hi BKN,
Regarding your question about hiring, this means that you can rent the skis for the entire season, for example, pick it up from the shop in December and use them the full season and return around March/April (exact dates depend on the shop I guess). From the place where I hired my skis last season (Pfister Sport), it was great because I could also swap the skis during the hire period if I wanted to try something different, or if they didn't fit properly etc. Given how much trouble I've had with ski boots in the past, this was great!
Good luck!
Nadja
