Measuring your Run

It is 8.5 years since I took up running - just a few months after coming to Switzerland. Since then the internet has moved on - and tracking how far you have run is now far easier.

Google's BETA pedestrian walking mode now covers most of Switzerland - and the maps are beginning to include some (edge of) urban trails.

Set your location - and then set a destination - google will pick the quickest/shortest route - you can then adjust as required.

(If you want to be flash - purchase SwissTopo Maps - this will also produce profiles for you)

Re: Measuring your Run

Have you noticed that many things are now measured in quantities of "football field lengths", and never the widths..

I am watching an astronomy program: the commentator says, "The mirror on the telescope is 10 meters across, or one tenth the length of a football field"

At least half the population have no idea that a football field is 100 meters long, including me, so why not say "Five door lengths"? or maybe assume that the intelligent viewers might actually know how wide 10 meters is....

Re: Measuring your Run

Despite all these new developments, I am still rather "analog" and take pleasure from marking out my running routes, and hikes/extendec dog walks, with a highlighter on a paper map. This method might not provide as much data, but enough for my needs and curiosity. I started running 35 years ago, stick in the mud attitude I guess...

Likewise, not forgetting the trusted silvermans compass for long hikes.

Re: Measuring your Run

As all my runs are on hills, how far I run is pretty immaterial.

I do take a map on longer runs and a compass on really foggy ones.

Re: Measuring your Run

I use the Nike+ running app . Helps me track my distance, pace ,GPS works great, there are many challenges on the go and you get your list of achievements, which makes for really enjoyable stats after the run.

The permitted football field length can vary between 90m and 120m. YOu knew even less than you thought.
