Looking for a climbing instructor in Zürich

Hi everyone,

I've never done any rock-climbing before and I'm interested in learning (indoor). I live in Zürich, and unfortunately, none of the beginners' courses at the Kletterzentrum Gaswerk or Milandia work well with my schedule.

I'd love to have an (at least slightly) experienced climber give me a lesson or two at one of those gyms so that I can learn the basics. I would be happy to pay you for your time, including your entrance fee into the gym.

Would anyone be interested in this?

Thanks!

--Emily

I really recommend you to go to a real course, because climbing includes serial safety risks. Of course you can get some experience with an experienced friend but you will anyway need a certificate of a course to go climbing by yourself. Just a friendly advice for your safety

The introductory climbing course in Basel (Kleterhalle K7) is decent, from what I've heard. Given in German though, afaik.

Re: Looking for a climbing instructor in Zürich

Learning climbing as:
a) how to grip, put your feet on holds etc on the low walls where you don't need rope
b) learning how to climb on rope, both top-rope and when leading

Why asking, because for b) you need some time, a climbing partner willing to spend some time with you and someone to supervise both of you

Milandia and Gaswerk both request that climbers document that they are qualified before granting admittance. I would expect that the same holds for all other *climbing* halls in the Zurich area.

Essentially, I suspect, this is to safe-guard against badness in the case of "incidents".

For bouldering, none of that should be required (and is not in the Minimum in Altstetten).

Have your go at http://www.kletterportal.ch/kletterhallen for more

Not true, they only require you to sign a statement that you are qualified and take responsibility in case of an accident.

So not actually a certificate as written earlier - just a disclaimer - which you have to sign for virtually any activity nowadays.

So the question is are you really willing to take the responsibility of your own and your climbing partner's safety (=life) without a qualification? Or are you ready to let your life literally on your climbing partner's hands if he/she doesn't really know what to do?

That's how I learnt. On Derbyshire gritstone - not at a wall.

Re: Looking for a climbing instructor in Zürich

Thanks to everyone who gave feedback or sent me a message! For some reason, I'm suddenly getting a lot of replies to this rather old post, so I thought I should give an update. Since my original post, I have managed to learn the basics of climbing, through some combination of a) bouldering with more experienced friends, b) messing around a lot by myself with bouldering, and c) waiting until a trip back home to the U.S., where I could learn to climb on ropes with friends who have done a lot of climbing. I'm now bouldering very regularly (though not climbing on ropes so much, since the gyms aren't as convenient for me) and it's going really well. So, while it's of course great to meet other people who enjoy climbing, I think I can officially rescind my previous request for an "instructor".
