Do you do Pilates?

Hello, looking for people who practice Pilates. Basically, how did it work for you? Were you in shape? Did you see a difference?

Thanks,
Nil

We were under the impression you were the embodiment of female perfection.

Are you saying there is room for improvement??

Honey, after 2 kids and 3 surgeries in 6 years, there is always room for improvement.

Re: Do you do Pilates?

1 - It works well for me, as it is low-impact for my joints. The moves are fairly simple, you don't need any equipment (except a mat), and you don't need to belong to a gym. I use YouTube videos in my livingroom.

2 - Nope, not in shape at all but getting there. It helps a lot with strengthening your core.

3 - Depends on what difference you want to see. I have barely lost any weight in the last six months but have lost inches. People are always commenting on my "weight loss" and I just laugh to myself.

I took a class (back in the states) for a year and definitely got strong. I think it is a great workout and a lot of great choices on YouTube.

Re: Do you do Pilates?

Pilates is really effective, if you keep it up!

I did a semi-private course with a couple of other new mums, with a trainer at a fully-equipped Pilates studio. We met twice a week, and I definitely felt a difference. Once the course was over, I thought I'd keep up the mat exercises using a DVD but I clearly have no willpower whatsoever, and pinged back into flabbiness depressingly quickly.

If you're interested, it's well worth having a trial session at a Pilates studio with all the equipment. It's a world away from doing the mat exercises, although a lot more expensive...

Re: Do you do Pilates?

I've been doing Pilates for the last 2 years, a mix of both reformer and mat pilates. I wouldn't say that I particularly lost weight but my waistline dropped by over an inch!!

For me the big thing about Pilates is that the exercises are designed to isolate muscle groups which means you don't need to do lots of reps to build muscle, but it does mean that you need a good instructor as sometimes the line between doing an exercise right and doing it wrong is sometimes very thin. If you do it wrong then you don't isolate the target muscle group as a result the exercises are considerably less effective.

When you guys are talking of not losing weight, you mean on the scale or the fat?

Re: Do you do Pilates?

On the scale From second-hand experience, muscle is the first to go when one isn't active. When a person is injured and unable to move for an extended period of time, that's what happens. Rebuilding one's body strength is a gradual process. I bet this applies to anyone, it is just a lot more obvious with those injured.

Re: Do you do Pilates?

I did it back in NYC -- reformer/cadillac, etc. Not the mat classes which only came out years afterwards. I loooooved what it did to for me.

I'm a big believer in the equipment-based method as opposed to mat classes, which can be "lighter" versions and oftentimes not taught by a certified pilates instructor. I would suggesting going to a pilates studio and unfortunately, suck up the high prices for private lessons if you can afford it (or find a partner and split it for a dual-session). It's an investment in you. Good luck!

For me, the scale. It's barely budged in 6 months but I have dropped a dress size and I look more toned. Forget the number on the scale, focus on how you feel and how your clothes fit. Feel free to come back to our little MFP group too, dear!

Re: Do you do Pilates?

I've done a mix of mat, reformer and megaformer over the last couple of years, and I love it. 'Did you see a difference' really depends on what you're looking for though. Generally speaking, pilates is great for developing core and overall body strength and increased flexibility, in a low impact way.
Mat pilates is great for core;
Reformer (like the allegro) is great for adding cardio elements and dynamic stretching which really improves flexibility;
the megaformer is amazing for toning and strength building. I've definitely seen an improvement in my flexibility, and core strength (and ab definition), but this has required a significant commitment (ie multiple times a week for an extended period of time), along with a healthy diet and incorporating other types of exercises.

Nil there is a class run by one of the open door (playgroup and english teaching club) parents in Guendeli. if you want more info I will PM you.

the classes are sat am and Monday am. Open door has a play group on the mon morning so you could pop your children in there and go next door to class. If they are the right age (2 to 4)

Yeah, my problem is that I don't bother to put my details in. Looking for all the bits and pieces I ate, the quantities and log my time in, etc.

Re: Do you do Pilates?

I had a really committed Pilates trainer post birth for a couple of years few times a week, we were a group. She was really tough (guys cried). It worked great for my lower back. I have moved to cardio since, religiously, and walk a few miles every day to be fit, keep weight on and most of all to get rid of energy, Pilates were too static for me after those years. But I do keep up part of the Pilates routine for my lower back, abs and flexibility, it's fab!
