UZH/ETH Gyms

Had a look at past threads but couldn't see many specific comments about the facilities/times.

I've just joined the ASVZ as an employee and I am looking to use the gym (cardio and weights); preferably the Hönggerberg one as that is close to my office. Had a look online and there is an individual training times table which seems very limiting, but I think that only applies to the halls, etc.(?). Other than that, I assume the cardio/weights room can be visitied throughout the opening hours of the building?

Also, just wondering when it is good to avoid going as I can go pretty flexibly and would prefer not to wait 10 mins to use a machine/weight - my experience of university gyms are they are extremely crowded (understandable given the price we pay).

Any help or tips would be appreciated!

Thanks

Re: UZH/ETH Gyms

My experience is with the ETH polyterasse gym but I can imagine the others are similar.

There is tons of huge classes you can take (cardio classes), I do not think there is any limitation of participants.

I spent most of the time lifting weights in the gym. Stay away from lunch and afternoon (16-21) and you will have no waiting times at all. Even in rush time I doubt I ever waited 10 minutes for anything.

There are individual training times (as you said) in the gym too, you'll get a personal trainer which gives you some tips. It is not impossible to get one of those times but don't expect to be doing this every week.

I train in Bern so can only speak from here, but the best if you can is to be the first one in the gym. All the machines are free, no one is around and you get to buddy up with the cleaning staff, who'll eventually start letting you in even earlier than the gym officially opens .

Agree, the earlier you go the better. Plus weekends are way less crowded, and Fluntern, the most remote is rather quiet usually.

The one in Hönggerberg is crowded during lunch hour and late afternoon. Go in the morning before noon to avoid the crowd.
