Seeking job in biking/adventure/tourism industry - tips?

Halli hallo! (I'm going to post the following in some other areas as well because I don't know where it best belongs - please bear with me)

Has anyone/does anyone currently work in the adventure/tourism industry? I'm in need of a change of pace (currently a civil engineer in an office 40+ hours/week) and I truly feel happiest and my best when I'm biking and on adventures. Even though I have no experience as a guide or even as a participant of adventures/tours on bikes, I know it's what I want.

Any help would be so greatly appreciated! I've done my fair deal of online searches for agencies, offices, etc. but I'd much prefer first person accounts and experiences!

And what exactly did you find in the way of agencies, etc? Because I don't think the sort of tours/adventures you're thinking of exist here. I can't recall seeing any advertising anywhere for them. Bike tours tend to be a do-it-yourself affair by simply planning routes along Switzerland's cycleways. Adventure breaks are possible, but again tend to be in set locations. This might help you though.

Still, I would think (hope) that you'd need certain qualifications regarding the safety of your clients so you might need to take some courses.

Re: Seeking job in biking/adventure/tourism industry - tips?

Hi,
I worked driving 4 wheel tours around New Zealand for a year. It has a brilliant adventure industry and I know that Kiwis find jobs here, though the opportunities are much more limited. There are lots of students involved, which in my case was good as they wanted more responsible drivers:msncool. I got my job through word of mouth (my wife worked in the office) and it was my impression that most of the jobs went this way. Obviously a specific skill/qualification is going to help - especially in Switzerland
Good luck

I have no experience in the industry, but recently was reading about "what tour guides wish you knew" and that led to other articles. I can't find the original anymore but here are two articles I found interesting:

Re: Seeking job in biking/adventure/tourism industry - tips?

Thanks everyone. I have run across some of those links during my own searches. I guess I am curious to know if an actual company exists in Switzerland that conducts bike tours specifically for Switzerland (most of the companies I ran across were "worldwide" and while that is appealing, at this moment for me it's not). Maybe I am looking in completely the wrong market and should just leisurely bike Switzerland! Oh well, eventually I'll find my place!

http://www.veloland.ch/de/buchbare-angebote.html would take you to commercial offers.

This is off the rather excellent http://www.schweizmobil.ch/en/schweizmobil.html web site

For the other kind of bike tours (the ones with the mud and so) I'd wager that those are local companies operating from the well-known areas, such as Davos, Laax, Interlaken. To find those hotspots, try browsing your local library for travel guides, go hunting for enthusiast forums on the Internet ("trails", "enduro", "cross-country" and "mtb" or "mountain bike").

Interlaken might be a decent place to start looking

Well, I just googled "swiss biking tours" and "swiss adventure tours" and came up with some companies based here. Should be easy enough for you to do the same.

Re: Seeking job in biking/adventure/tourism industry - tips?

One company I've used:
http://www.alpencross.ch/alpencross/job.html

But the tour was in Austria and they had hired a local guide.

Pay is, I assume, very low. Which is why most guides need an actual job that pays the bills.

These days, I assume you also need some sort of certification - Forum member "Eire" could probably tell you more about this.

If I were you, I would try to find another office-job that doesn't suck (if your current one sucks). Maybe somewhere that pays a bit lower but values a healthy work-life balance, so you have more time for your hobby.
Or maybe you can take a very long holiday during the summer to make long bike-tours overseas (=here).
I wouldn't say I'd never give up a stable job for an "adventure" (because I did, once) - but you're not 20-something anymore (neither am I), so one has to be a bit realistic and careful.

Oh sh1t.
I got it mixed up. Or rather: didn't thoroughly read the original post :-(
Sorry.
Wouldn't be bad to know the age of the OP, though.

Re: Seeking job in biking/adventure/tourism industry - tips?

I'm almost 25

Thanks for all the links! I'm going to have to skim through these during the next few nights.

I might just at some point say f@&$ it and go on an adventure somewhere in the world and not care about a career. Just seems really scary to not have stability (steady income/significant other/house) before starting!

A neighbor of mine does exactly what you describe. He is a project manager Race/Sponsoring/Merchandising at Swiss Epic. You might want to check them out. They organize a bunch of really epic events.

They even have an open position

Good luck.

You probably want to get yourself a recognised mountain leader qualification. I only know the SMBLA one but I guess there must be an international or Swiss version

Re: Seeking job in biking/adventure/tourism industry - tips?

How did you go in finding a job in this field. I would also be interested to find a job in the adventure tourism industry. I am a qualified phys ed teacher and studied business management and worked in the industry when i was studying in Australia. Or even just to find people that are interested in exploring the mountains and what they have to offer.
