Trail running in Zurich

Hey guys

I'm a keen runner and I'm relocating to Zurich this summer.

But due to myriad injuries I need to train on soft ground i.e. grass, mud etc. so I wanted to live close to some decent trails.

So far I've identifed Zurichberg, Adlisberg, Honggerburg and Uetliberg as areas I might want to live near too.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I suggest you stop running, as you are injuring yourself, and take up swimming. Think outside the box!

Zurich is surrounded by "trails" but they might not be the soft solution you are looking for. Wanderland.ch has a "karte" (map) - and you'll be able to see just how many trails there are close to the city.

If you are looking for softest running surface look for a nearby Finnenbahn - https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/ted/de/...en/laufen.html - which are lit in Summer until 10pm and Winter until 9pm.

Running is hugely popular in Switzerland - datasport.com - is the usual portal for entry. There are races for everyone from 5k to Ultra marathons.

You may want to understand how and why you are getting injured though, as this will ensure you can run whenever and wherever you want!

Re: Trail running in Zurich

Thanks, that's helpful.

Iím an ironman triathlete but sadly I suffer too many impact injuries if I run on asphalt. Essentially because my core is weak and I don't have enough time/motivation to strengthen it. I find those kind of workouts really dull!

Re: Trail running in Zurich

Good afternoon,

Well, it is right, with all the injuries you had Trail running is not a good deal at all even on the soft.
It could be nice to enjoy cycle or Mountain biking, just to reduce the impact, so you can recuperate a bit and see how it goes with yours injuries.
You can enjoy the ride for one hour or more or going out for the entire day, which is nice too.

Good luck and take care of you.
Cheers

Does anyone know if there's a Finnenbahn at Hardoff?

This map says there is but when I went this afternoon all I could find was tennis courts and football pitches - no running trail?

Welcome to Switzerland ..

Lesson 1 .. When the Stadt Zurich says it to be .. it will be..

I can clearly see the running track on Google earth.

I am highly dubious of the logic that running on tarmac is any worse than on soft ground but thats just an option. Loads of good runs in Zurich .. Enjoy

I've never seen/heard of the Hardhof one - but this is the closest http://www.altstetterwald.ch/angebote/sport.htm - the track is just up from Friedhofstrasse

They are usually in wooded sections

Re: Trail running in Zurich

Found it!

It's actually an undulating trail comprising bark chips that loops between football pitch and park.

It's maybe 800m long and starts by Hardhof tram stop, opposite side of tracks to the cafe.

You should join us at http://www.crossfitzuerich.ch/ to get your whole body to work in harmony. There's a bunch of us that trail run at weekends and occasional nice weekdays especially in the summer up in the mountains. Can wholeheartedly recommend it.
