Butt hurt after 15 mintues with new bike...Any tips?

Hey!

So I just got a new hardtail mountainbike from the second hand market, and I biked home. I just felt a bit tiring maybe because i havn't biked for a year. But then last night when I sit, my burt hurt. I am wondering if its because the bike comes with a racing saddle or because or lack of cycling for a while or other reasons. Should I get a new saddle?

It will be great if anyone can give me some tips! Thanks!

The more you ride the less it will hurt - after the initial few times.

There are soft gel saddles or saddle covers easily available - a good idea to change.

Also wearing proper padded cycle shorts or longs, will help (a bit).

Re: Butt hurt after 15 mintues with new bike...Any tips?

Initially the question must be whether it's a soreness from rubbing or from pressure. If the former then proper cycling shorts will help, but more because of the non-chafing material they're padded with than the padding itself. Gel saddles are sometimes counter-productive, because they can often spread the load to parts of your bum that are less able to cope with the pressure.

If it's just pressure then you should first try adjusting the saddle angle and position so that you're sitting on what are sometimes referred to as your sit-bones.

As ever, the late Sheldon Brown's pages have the best information you'll find on this subject and most other cycling questions.

Sheldon Brown is one of the best resources around! I would also recommend wearing shorts and undershorts with minimal or not seams. But agree that best prescription is to just keep riding.

Isn't that a waste of a good steak?
I can't imagine anyone wanting to eat it after it had been down there but at Swiss prices maybe you'd have to.

^^^ + 100 to what he said.
Also do remember that proper saddle positioning is key if you plan to bike a lot - wrong saddle position (length, height) can lead to knee problems as well.

Re: Butt hurt after 15 mintues with new bike...Any tips?

For my experience, don't buy the soft gel sadle that you put over yours.
1 - you will get used as much as you ride
2 - the sadle must not hurt you that much, thete is always a little pain, but they schould be let you go on with not much problem... dependes how far you ride
3 - Buy a proper pants/shorts for biking.
4 - Change the saddle if the short doesn't work. If the sadle is wrong you will feel pain during the ride, not only afater....

I reckon it's this. If you continue you to cycle, it should sort it self out in a few weeks.

Re: Butt hurt after 15 mintues with new bike...Any tips?

Just a word on the gel saddles, from my experience.

My MTB had a relatively narrow, fairly hard saddle.
My riding was intermittent and seasonal, and like the OP, I used have buttock ache (muscular and not from friction), until the muscles firmed up and got used to it.
One time, when I was in Aldi, a year or so back, they had a big promotion on bike accessories, and one of the items was gel saddles.
As there was one exactly the same shape as my existing one, I bought one to try.

Whether this is the norm with all gel saddles, or they vary throughout different brands, but the one I bought wasn't soft and squidgy and is almost as firm as the normal one. It does, however, have just a small amount of give, when pushed, and this just makes it a bit more forgiving over bumpy ground - even with rear suspension.

I still ride intermittently, but don't suffer as much with butt muscle ache.

My wife, on the other hand, is a very occasional cyclist, and when here bike was new (about 18yrs. ago), she had similar problems with her butt from the saddle.
At that time, there didn't seem to be a wide availability of gel saddles, but I did find a gel saddle cover. This is more squidgy, but works for her with her limited use.
